Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will possess
- An understanding of the importance of customer service as well as the methods used to provide a high level of customer service.
- Two or more years in Public sector maintenance worker experience and/or experience in a similar field.
- Possession of a valid California Commercial Drivers License (Class A or B) with a valid medical examiner's certificate at time of application.
- Paving and roadwork experience.
Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of
- Equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in maintenance, construction and repair activities including hazards associated with the work and proper safety precautions.
- Traffic laws, ordinances, and rules involved in truck and heavy equipment operations.
- Purposes and uses of a variety of vehicles, equipment, power tools and hand tools including motorized, pneumatic, and hydraulic equipment.
- Construction materials, paints, and a variety of other materials used in maintenance work.
- Proper set up and use of traffic control devices.
- City and department policies and procedures.
- Safe work practices.
Skill in
- Operating required tools, vehicles and equipment in a safe and effective manner.
- Operating office equipment, including computers and supporting applications.
Ability to
- Perform skilled maintenance, construction, and repair work in the area of work assigned.
- Perform heavy manual tasks.
- Maintain accurate records.
- Work safely and adhere to established safety principles and practices.
- Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Provide courteous and efficient service to the public and City employees.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public.

Education And Experience
Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the knowledge, skills and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way would be:
Education: Graduation from high school or equivalent.
Experience
Maintenance Worker I: One year of maintenance or construction experience is desirable.
Maintenance Worker II: Two years of increasingly responsible experience within the assigned area of responsibility.
LICENSES OR CERTIFICATES
Licenses
Possession of a valid California Class "B" driver's license with appropriate endorsements and continue to meet the requirements for renewal.
Certificates
Ability to obtain CWEA Grade I (or higher) Collection System Maintenance certification within one year from date of appointment.
Physical, Environmental Working Conditions
Ability to perform heavy manual labor including lifting and carrying heavy objects. Perform pushing, pulling, twisting and bending needed for rodding sewer lines. Work outdoors in adverse weather. Work in and around raw sewage.

Public Works Maintenance Worker I - $ 5,339.63- $6,490.35
Public Works Maintenance Worker II - $ 5,910.63- $7,184.41
- Health Insurance - You will have access to comprehensive health insurance plans, which include: Medical insurance via the CalPERS Medical Program. With a City contribution of up to $2,893.54 a month towards plan premium.
- Employer paid dental insurance via Delta Dental PPO (nominal monthly cost for dependents).
- Vison Insurance via VSP for you and your eligible dependents.
- Retirement- The City of Belmont participates in the CalPERS Retirement Plan. Employees are enrolled at the PEPRA Member or Classic Member subject to CalPERS regulations.
- Deferred Compensation - The City makes a monthly contribution of 1.3% of employee's base salary plus $150/month into employee's 457 Deferred Compensation Account. In addition, employees can make pre-tax contributions via payroll deduction.
- Paid Time Off: We understand the importance of work-life harmony. You will receive accrual of paid time off, including vacation days, sick days, and holidays.
- Vacation - Accrual starts at 6.33 hours per month of service, equal to ten (10) days per year. Prior years of public service may be considered when granting accrual rate.
- Sick Leave - Earned at one day (8 hours) per month of service.
- Eleven (11) Holidays with two (2) Floating Holidays after a year of service
This position is covered by the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) labor group.
