Position Summary: The Union Strength & Affiliate Communications Manager plays a vital role in advancing NEA’s mission to empower educators and promote public education as a cornerstone of democracy. NEA, the nation’s largest professional organization, represents over 3 million members who are committed to ensuring that every student, regardless of background, has access to quality education. This position is dedicated to strengthening partnerships with NEA’s affiliates, providing them with tools, strategies, and communication support to increase their impact. By fostering collaboration, addressing unique affiliate needs, and implementing responsive and proactive communications, the Affiliate Manager will help build the capacity of affiliates to drive successful campaigns, support member engagement, and amplify NEA’s values of equity, advocacy, and educational excellence in communities nationwide. Strengthens the efforts of NEA at all levels, primarily state, federal, and local. Lead a team to harness the political and grassroots power that comes from our 3 million members in affiliates in every state, and supporters in communities all across the country. Support the Organizing Department in the recruitment and retention of members.

This position is a DC-based position with NEA's headquarters building serving as the central workplace. Individuals who are hired for certain positions may request approval for telework in accordance with the policies and guidelines for the staff unit to which the position is assigned. Key Responsibilities For The Position Are Outlined Below.

Affiliate Support:

  • Work across a multi-issue spectrum concerning NEA and its affiliates
  • Collaborate with national and affiliate communications staff to contribute to comprehensive communications and earned media coverage of grassroots organizing projects and events
  • Drive the growth and scaling of the adoption of tools and resources among state affiliates so they can be leveraged to maximize the efficacy of affiliate campaigns and programs; including owning and negotiating contracts for enterprise tools
  • Facilitate intentional collaboration among affiliates and support and empower them to develop their capacity to grow membership and fully leverage the power of our union to engage members and the public
  • Recognize the uniqueness of each affiliate and provide rapid response, crisis support, coordinated proactive messaging, enterprise communications tools, training opportunities, and strategic consulting on communications best practices
  • Lead a grant program, driving application submissions, creating transparency in evaluation criteria, leading the evaluation process and award notifications, and ensuring timely disbursements

Organizing and Mobilization:

  • Lay a foundation for the team to design, execute, and assist affiliates in planning organizing-based actions (both traditional field organizing actions and distributed/digital actions) for state and local campaigns as well as nationwide efforts and events
  • Develop, implement, and refine membership recruitment campaigns in partnership with the Center for Organizing with a specific and primary concentration on how state affiliates can easily adopt and roll out from their home base
  • Participate and provide counsel with national coalition engagement, planning, and organizing program execution
  • Develop, plan, and execute grassroots engagement experimentation, data collection, analysis, and results-based recommendations
  • Shape NEA’s and affiliates’ grassroots engagement on key political issues and pending legislation

Leadership & Management

  • Manage staff, including remote staff and consultants, for program success and professional growth.
  • Closely track political developments, and identify strategic organizing and advocacy opportunities for NEA, including opportunities for multi-state or national solutions
  • Leverage data, internal and external research, and audience analytics to inform campaigns and implement strategies for optimizing the reach and impact of campaigns
  • Cultivate constructive relationships with colleagues within the Center for Communications and across the organization
  • Demonstrate financial stewardship and fiduciary fidelity in all efforts, making the most judicious and efficient use of NEA members’ dues dollars

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field required or an equivalent com­bination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills may be acquired.
  • Minimum of 10 years of professional experience in communications and/or political, advocacy, and/or issue campaigns, including 5 years of demonstrated experience in management, including the ability to delegate responsibly, prioritize work activities, monitor progress, coach staff toward success, and ensure accountability.
  • Significant experience in a member-based and mission-driven organization
  • Preferred experience working in or with NEA affiliates
  • Demonstrated expertise in fundamental organizing approaches and skills, and the ability to inspire and teach others about organizing
  • Understanding and capacity to learn and adapt to new organizing approaches and skills and coach others to learn and deploy them as well
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills necessary to convey complex concepts, research, and analysis in a clear and concise manner
  • Must be self-motivated and possess the ability to work independently as well as within teams
  • Ability to work and communicate quickly and accurately, handle multiple projects by devoting time and energy to the most important responsibilities, and lead others in doing so
  • Experience managing candidate or issue campaign teams
  • Experience developing, executing, and/or evaluating data-driven organizing programs, experiments/tests, and/or pilot projects
  • Experience using VAN or similar databases for voter and volunteer engagement
  • Understanding of multiple approaches to organizing including distributed and digital
  • Ability to work and thrive in matrixed and federated environment
