General Purpose
This position is responsible for maintaining and testing all existing electrical and electronic equipment including Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and associated equipment in atBED’s generating facilities. In addition, this position is responsible for installing new equipment as directed.

Please Note: BED is looking to hire one Electrician 1st Class A. Applications for both Electrician 1st Class A - Production and Electrician 1st Class A Lead Worker - Production will be considered to fill this opening.
Essential Job Functions
- Directs, schedules, and performs maintenance on electrical equipment including preventative maintenance checks at BED’s generating facilities.
- Daily supervision of the Apprentice Electrician and responsibility for his/her on-the-job training and record keeping of such. This position will be held accountable for the Apprentice Training.
- Provides instruction to employees and electrical contractors on electrical equipment at BED’s generating facilities, including but not limited to, annual overhauls, special projects, etc.
- Participates in staff meetings to plan for electrical work .
- Maintains and installs new wiring of any BED generating facility control system, including control panels, CRT, and process computers, etc.
- Maintains records on electrical equipment, PMS, motors, etc.
- Performs maintenance on all BED generating facility station heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems.
- Operate and maintain various turbines (i.e., jet engines, gas expander turbines, hydro turbines, etc.)
- Perform the Gas Turbine (GT) on call responsibility on a rotating basis by responding to after hour callouts to qualify the GT to participate in the ISO-New England Forward Reserve Market (“FRM”).
- Rebuilds small motors.
- Maintains 125 VDC control and emergency power system.
- Interprets engineering drawings on old and new wiring and produces as-built drawings of any electrical changes at the station.
- Performs safety inspection and record keeping on all electrical tools.
- Install, repair, and program all electrical equipment at the plant including high voltage components of the electrostatic precipitator, transformer rectifiers, control adjustments, DC components, supply voltage, breakers, control circuits and electronics, rappers, controls, hopper heaters, level probes and grounds and data and voice communication equipment.
- Maintain, modify, wire, design, and program the programmable logic controllers (PLCs) at BED’s generating facilities.
- Maintain analog boiler control system.
- Responsible for maintenance, switching and grounding of 13,800-volt electrical equipment within McNeil Generation as required including associated protective devices and breakers.
- Perform manual and remote operation of 35KV equipment at McNeil Generating Station.
- Install, repair and/or maintain electrical and electronic equipment associated with the high-pressure boiler, turbine, generator, fuel handling, lighting, fire alarm, security, and communications at BED’s generating facilities.
- Maintain and modify electrical distribution systems for the production facilities including voltages of 13,800 VAC, 4160 VAC, 480 VAC, 220 VAC, 110 VAC, 125 VDC and lower.
- Perform electrical testing such as meggaring, Hipot testing, ground fault testing, emergency lighting, uninterruptible power supply and 125 VDC batteries, and miscellaneous testing on 13.8 KV, 4.16 KV switchgear, high voltage splicing and wire terminations.
- Perform electrical maintenance on station trucks and loaders.
- Perform electrical maintenance on security/surveillance system including closed circuit TV system.
- Contact vendor on equipment related problems or modification.
- Assist Technicians with maintenance and modifications to components of plant instrumentation.
Non-Essential Job Functions:
- Operate heavy equipment including forklift, lift platform and small bucket truck.
- Unload railcars as needed.
- Clean assigned areas as directed
- Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications/Basic Job Requirements

- Must possess a Vermont Master Electricians license.
- Associate degree in Electrical Engineering or related field or certification of completion of a two-year electrical/electronic technical program and a minimum of four years’ experience required.
- Additional years of experience may be substituted for a degree requirement on a two-for-one-year basis.
- Must have experience with electronics and programmable logic controllers.
- Must have knowledge of analog and digital circuitry systems.
- Required to possess a valid State of Vermont driver’s license.
- Must have the ability to interact harmoniously with co-workers.
- Must be in good physical condition.
- Ability to adhere to safety procedures and guidelines, work in confined spaces, work around energized high voltage equipment, and wear appropriate safety equipment as required.
- Must be able to read and understand engineering drawings, electrical schematic diagrams, and wire circuit drawings.
- Basic computer competency in word processing, spreadsheet and email is required.
- Must have the ability to diagnose, trouble shoot, and fix equipment as needed.
- Regular attendance is necessary and is essential to meeting the expectations of the job functions.
- Ability to understand and comply with City standards, safety rules and personnel policies.
- Ability to work overtime as needed consistent with the provisions of the BED/IBEW Collective Bargaining Agreement.
