The Lansing Board of Water & Light (BWL) has one opening for
Bulk Power Controller in Lansing, MI, as part of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, AFL-CIO, Local Union 352.
Position Summary
Optimizes the BWL Generation asset portfolio within the MISO market to provide reliable and affordable electric service to BWL customers.
Essential Functions
- Evaluates the MISO market and makes financial decisions for the real-time dispatch of BWL generating assets
- Adheres to intra-day market forecasts, enters bids and offers into the MISO market, monitors and dispatches BWL generation
- Coordinates generation dispatch within System Operating Limits. Employs good written and verbal communication skills to properly interact with customers, other industry personnel, and other employees
- Performs normal and emergency system operations
- Performs other related duties as required or when necessitated by job responsibilities
- Attends all training for safety awareness and skills improvement as required by the supervisor, BWL or governmental agency such as NERC and MIOSHA
- Required to follow BWL safety manual rules and wear required personal protective equipment
- Follows and enforces BWL security policies and procedures
Job Requirements
- Math skills in basic algebra and ability to understand daily market forecasts
- Computer and financial skills required to prepare spreadsheets, develop formulae, work with macros, enter data into energy management system (EMS), enter financial and physical schedules, bids, and offers into the MISO market, utilize e-mail, and use the internet
- Previous generation experience and strong familiarity with operations in transmission and generation systems preferred
- Strong negotiation and communication skills
- Ability to make decisions quickly under pressure of time constraints, cost containment, and while handling critical incidents
- Able to write legibly and clearly
Position requires knowledge of electrical disciplines with a minimum of any one of the following as outlined below:
- Associate’s degree in a technical field (e.g., math, engineering, science)
- Associate’s degree in business field (e.g., accounting or marketing)
- Classified as a BWL Journeyworker
- Power Plant Control Room Operator
- Has worked two or more years in a position equivalent in function and responsibility to the BPC , such as experience as an Electric System Operator or in a similar capacity at another utility
AND Must successfully complete the assessment process.- The assessment process will be comprised of multiple modules designed to evaluate knowledge of math skills, Microsoft Word and Excel, ability to communicate clearly and distinctly by phone and in writing, ability to cope with and resolve high-pressure situations, load forecasting abilities, reading comprehension, and data entry
- Must work rotating shift and overtime
- Minimal travel required for job training
- Must be able to pass NERC exam within twelve months and maintain NERC certification in addition to any other certifications within the required time
- Must demonstrate a high level of technical competency
- CIP background check required
Physical Requirements / Working Conditions
- Duties involve minimal lifting
- Good visual acuity necessary to read charts, diagrams, differentiate colors and read data from computer terminal
