Job Description

TITLES: Custodian/Maintenance/Grounds

REPORTS TO: Principal

HOURS: 10am-6:30 pm (with variability) based on school events, deep cleaning needs, or seasonal maintenance

SALARY: $21.10 -- $24.83 an hour per AFSCME Contract

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Knowledge and working experience in lawn care, carpentry, building maintenance or custodial work
  • MN Boiler Operator’s license preferred
  • Must pass a Criminal Records History Clearance
  • Excellent communication skills

Responsibilities For Custodian

  • Keep all floors in a clean and attractive condition and in good state of preservation
  • Sweep, mop, wet-wash and vacuum floors as necessary, periodically waxing floors with buffing machine.
  • Wash walls, ceilings, and inside and outside of windows.
  • Move furniture as required.
  • Gather and dispose of trash, keep waste receptacles clean, reline with plastic bags.
  • Clean and maintain lighting fixtures, using ladder or hydraulic lift as needed.
  • Scrub and disinfect bathrooms and drinking fountains daily.
  • Keep building and premises, including sidewalks and driveways clean at all times.
  • Daily check to ensure that all exit doors are open and all panic bolts are working properly.
  • Report to the Administration any damage to school property or major building repair needs.
  • Keep inventory of supplies, equipment and fuel on hand. Replacing as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities For Maintenance

  • Perform preventative maintenance on mechanical equipment, electrical, plumbing, heating and cooling systems along with general maintenance.
  • Diagnose repair work on equipment and district building.
  • Maintain district grounds as assigned.
  • Complete interior and exterior painting as needed.
  • Keep sidewalks, steps and ramps shoveled and sanded as necessary.
  • Complete summer maintenance duties as directed.
  • Report damages and/or repair work needed to the Administration.

Responsibilities Of Grounds

  • Keep all district grounds mowed, trimmed and groomed as needed.
  • Perform light maintenance, lubrication and fueling on all grounds equipment as needed.
  • Coordinate and implement snow removal at the district building including early morning call outs.

Physical And Sensory Requirements

  • Must have the ability to sit, stand, and/or walk for extended periods during the entire shift.
  • Must have the ability to balance, climb, crouch, feel, finger grasp, lift, pull, push, stoop and reach above shoulder level.
  • Must have the ability to sustain repetitive movements for a limited period of time (i.e one- two hours)
  • Must have the ability to lift 50 pounds maximum with frequent lifting/carrying of up to 25 pounds. (*employees are encouraged to seek assistance when lifting objects over 50 pounds when possible)
  • Must have the ability to receive detailed information through oral communication
  • Must have the ability to express or exchange information by means of spoken words. Must have the ability to read, understand, speak and write English. Bilingual skills helpful.
  • Must be self-motivated and self-directed.
  • Must have the ability to work with chemicals, solvents, paints, cleaning solutions, lubricants, fuels, fertilizers, and other toxic chemicals.
  • Must have the ability to work in dirty and dusty conditions from time to time.

Work Environment

  • Subject to both indoor and outdoor temperature extremes.
  • Exposure to extreme heat near boilers, ovens and engines, as well as noisy conditions.
  • Exposure to solvents, paints, cleaning solutions, waxes, fuels, chlorine, food waste and bathrooms.
  • Use of latex gloves and safety apparel.
  • Work around students, faculty and crowds.
  • Variable hours or work possible (days, evenings or weekends)

This position is part of the AFSCME union. This is a non-exempt position.
