Position Overview
The Accelerator Technologist II - Wastewater Treatment Operator works under general or intermittent supervision and performs assignments of basic to intermediate complexity in metal finishing, wastewater treatment and field installations and work across other areas such as machining, welding, sheet metal, machine maintenance, vacuum assembly, mechanical assembly and/or field installation as needed.
The Technologist II will conduct a block of work as a complete project, or as a portion of a larger and more diverse project, with strict adherence to site-specific safety requirements as well as work planning and control (WPC) protocols for shop, field or experimental areas. Assignments may include the designing of fixtures and tooling, pump and motor installation and testing, torch brazing, and soldering, the fabrication of simple coils and the disassembly, repair, and reassembling of magnets.
The Technologist will work in radiation controlled areas. Will communicate and coordinate with line supervision as to effort status, progress, and completion timelines. Must be able to follow all SLAC safety rules and regulations and identify areas for improvement.
Given the nature of this position, SLAC will require onsite work.
Your Specific Responsibilities Include
- Operate the Metal Finishing Pretreatment Facility (MFPF). Analyzes treated Plating Shop wastewater to assure that the metals content is at or below the maximum allowed for discharge to the Sanitary Sewer. Collect and analyze data as needed for troubleshooting or evaluating system performance.
- Maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and install/remove Plating Shop and Metal Finishing Pretreatment Facility (MFPF) components and equipment. Assemble, modify, fabricate, upgrade, clean, waste treatment and electrolytic equipment of minimal complexity from engineering drawings, sketches, and verbal instructions.
- Under guidance of supervisor or senior technicians, performs cleaning and/or plating operations as experience dictates.
- Interact directly with stakeholders, managers, customers and other shop technicians.
- Install mechanical components of moderate complexity in the Field in all areas of the LCLS machine.
- Perform additional duties as required.
Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of experience in metal finishing and water treatment, or have an equivalent combination of vocational school, on the job training and experience.
- Must be able to perform assignments of basic to intermediate complexity in metal finishing and water treatment.
- Working knowledge and expertise of various degreasers, power supplies, pumps, filters, dosing equipment and MFPF control equipment.
- Has thorough knowledge of industrial wastewater pretreatment procedures.
- Working knowledge of industrial wastewater pretreatment fundamental practices and technology.
- Has a working knowledge of characteristics and properties on various materials.
- Operates a variety of hand and power tools.
- Qualified as a forklift, overhead crane, and motor vehicle operator.
- Has a working knowledge of basic arithmetic and measuring systems.
- Must be able to use technical shop language.
- Possesses knowledge of metal finishing methods and procedures and has an ability to organize and maintain records and materials in an efficient manner.
- Demonstrated understanding of the basic concepts related to metal finishing and specific environmental, health and safety hazards.
- Must possess a valid California Driver's License and a good driving record for driving vehicles around SLAC site.

The expected pay range for this position is $45.89 (Step 1) - $55.46 (Step 10) per hour. Placement in the range is subject to the applicable Collective Bargaining Unit. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
