Overview:

The Michigan AFL-CIO, a non-profit federation representing over 1 million working people across the state, is seeking a highly skilled and strategic Finance Director to oversee and manage its financial operations. Reporting directly to the Chief of Staff, the Finance Director will be responsible for ensuring the fiscal integrity of the Michigan AFL-CIO and its federated divisions (“Federation”), including accounting, budgeting, financial reporting, compliance, and operational support for all programs and activities. Qualified candidates should have experience overseeing the financial operations of a medium to large membership organization, training or educational institution, or community service organization. Strongly preferred is experience managing accounting for multiple revenue streams, including both public and private grants.

As a key member of the executive management team, the Finance Director plays a vital role in shaping and implementing the organization’s financial strategy, internal controls, and risk management. They will lead and supervise financial and accounting staff while working closely with the President, Board of Directors, and executive leadership to maintain the organization’s financial health and sustainability.

This role is also the primary contact for all contractual agreements, funding proposals, grant management, and business development initiatives. The Finance Director ensures compliance with GAAP, State of Michigan financial regulations, and grant funding requirements, while driving financial efficiency across the Federation’s divisions.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Oversee day-to-day accounting, financial operations, and reporting to maintain fiscal accountability.
Lead the development and management of budgets for the Federation and its affiliated programs.
Prepare, analyze, and present monthly financial reports for internal leadership, funding sources, and external stakeholders.
Manage cash flow, banking activities, and financial planning to support organizational needs.
Supervise financial staff and oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll functions.
Ensure accurate financial reporting in compliance with GAAP and state regulatory standards.
Serve as the primary liaison with auditors, ensuring the timely completion of the annual financial audit.
Monitor legal, regulatory, and administrative financial environments, implementing necessary compliance measures.
Oversee and manage fiscal aspects of contracts, grants, and funding agreements with vendors and service providers.
Lead risk management and liability insurance programs, conducting financial risk assessments.
Evaluate and enhance employee benefits programs to ensure cost-effectiveness and compliance.
Support fundraising efforts and financial development initiatives, including grant proposals and donor relations.

Required Qualifications and Skills:

Knowledge Of:

General accounting and financial reporting aligned with GAAP and state standards.
Knowledge of the Generally Accepted Government Auditing Standards (GAGAS) and the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Circular A-123.
Non-profit financial management, including grant budgeting, compliance, and the design and implementation of internal controls.
Payroll processing, employee benefits, and human resources finance regulations.
Contract negotiations and business development in the non-profit sector.
Financial software systems and accounting platforms including Sage Intacct, Concur and Divvy.
Familiarity with software including Microsoft Office Suite.

Ability To:

Develop, oversee, and analyze financial statements, budgets, and audits.
Lead and supervise financial staff, including performance evaluations and development plans.
Communicate complex financial information clearly to leadership, staff, and external partners.
Multitask and manage multiple projects and deadlines efficiently.

Education, Experience, and Skills:

Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
5-7 years of senior financial management experience in a non-profit, labor, or social service organization with $5M+ in annual operations.
Experience with state or federal grant-funded programs and financial monitoring practices.
Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation is preferred but not required.
A mission-driven mindset and a meaningful connection to or basic understanding of the union movement is a plus.
Must demonstrate high ethical standards and integrity, be self-motivated, reliable, and detail-oriented, and effectively collaborate with staff, senior and executive management, and funding sources.
Must possess a valid driver’s license.

Compensation:

Salary Range: $95,000 - $110,000, based on experience.
