Overview:
The Michigan AFL-CIO, a non-profit federation representing over 1 million working people across the state, is seeking a highly skilled and strategic Finance Director to oversee and manage its financial operations. Reporting directly to the Chief of Staff, the Finance Director will be responsible for ensuring the fiscal integrity of the Michigan AFL-CIO and its federated divisions (“Federation”), including accounting, budgeting, financial reporting, compliance, and operational support for all programs and activities. Qualified candidates should have experience overseeing the financial operations of a medium to large membership organization, training or educational institution, or community service organization. Strongly preferred is experience managing accounting for multiple revenue streams, including both public and private grants.
As a key member of the executive management team, the Finance Director plays a vital role in shaping and implementing the organization’s financial strategy, internal controls, and risk management. They will lead and supervise financial and accounting staff while working closely with the President, Board of Directors, and executive leadership to maintain the organization’s financial health and sustainability.
This role is also the primary contact for all contractual agreements, funding proposals, grant management, and business development initiatives. The Finance Director ensures compliance with GAAP, State of Michigan financial regulations, and grant funding requirements, while driving financial efficiency across the Federation’s divisions.
