Overview

Brief Job Description (essential functions of the job):

Supervises and assists in work necessary for the installation and maintenance of traffic signal systems. Supervises and assists in the installation, removal, connection testing, and splicing of cables in city-owned conduit systems.

Responsibilities

  • Instructs in the field and acts as a group leader. Instructs and assists in shop hardware pre-assembly and disassembly as well as explaining field procedures.
  • Inspects work in progress to ensure that installations are done in a neat and workmanship-like manner and are in compliance with local and national codes such as the manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, Massachusetts Electric Code, etc.
  • Conducts on-site training and instructional courses for traffic signal employees in all areas of traffic signal repair.
  • Must possess knowledge in both digital and solid-state electronics. Must be able to troubleshoot to the component level.
  • Must be able to set up, install, and troubleshoot Electro-mechanical, NEMA TR1, and TS2 Type traffic signal equipment.
  • Must be able to set up and repair all types of coordination systems such as the RCU system, closed loop system, as well as interconnect systems and time-based.
  • Assists in the preparation and submission of the signal division's annual budget.
  • Prepares requisitions and purchase orders.
  • Performs related work as required.

May be required to work any five consecutive days, including evening or weekend shifts.

Required to work any emergency as directed by the Commissioner of Transportation.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications

  • Minimum of three (3) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience working with video electronics and fiber optics in traffic signal applications and in the installation of traffic signal hardware and cables. Additional experience preferred.
  • Good knowledge of traffic control systems operation. Good knowledge of local and national codes, including the manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, National Electrical Manufacturers Association Standards, etc.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.

Certificate Requirement

Massachusetts Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B with air brakes endorsement.

Massachusetts Department of Public Safety hoisting engineer's license Class 1B.

International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Traffic Signal Repair Level II Certification

Boston Residency Required

CIVIL SERVICE APPLICANTS PREFERRED.
