This position is available as a Workout of Class (WOC) Underfill/Developmental for those who do not meet the minimum qualifications for the Corrections Recreations Specialist 2. Internal candidates who do not meet the minimum qualifications for the regular or underfill classifications may be considered for a job rotation as a developmental with their current supervisor’s approval. The developmental position is anticipated to last one year, though, may be reduced or extended based on business need.

Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications for the Recreation Specialist 2 may have preference.

This recruitment will be used to establish a list of qualified candidates to fill the current vacancy and may be used to fill future vacancies as they occur.

This position is represented by American Federations of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME). This position may be eligible for Police & Fire (P&F) benefits through Public Employees Retirement System (PERS), as defined by statute.

Duties

As the Correctional Recreation Specialist, you provide program assessment, design, coordinate and implement a wide variety of social, cultural, and athletic skill acquisition and leisure time activities along with a variety of security functions.

In this position you are responsible for developing and coordinating facility events, Adults in Custody (AIC) activities and Life Skills programs; inventorying and monitoring recreation equipment and other Life Skills supplies; and assess the availability of funding, equipment, facility space, and community resources. Design AIC program proposals for submission to your supervisor and superintendent for review and approvals. You provide supervision and serve as a liaison for all volunteers, staff, and the community to ensure training, orientation, and facility familiarization requirements are met.

You will be providing a high level of customer service, streamlining any and all processes associated with running a revenue generating business including hiring, training, holding AICs accountable for misuse of equipment, reinforcing positive behavior change, and terminating of its workers.

Minimum Qualifications

Recreation Specialist 2 ($5,105 - 6,863.00)

Three years of experience assessing, developing, coordinating, and implementing recreational programs and leisure time activities; OR

a bachelor's degree in Recreational Management, Physical Education or a related field.

Recreation Specialist 1 Underfill ($4,653 - 6,256.00)

One year of experience assessing, developing, coordinating and implementing recreational programs and leisure time activities.

34-quarter hours (21 semester hours) in Recreation or Physical Education or related coursework will substitute for the experience.

Developmental Rotation

Employees who do not meet the minimum qualifications for the regular or underfill position may be considered for a developmental rotation with their current supervisor’s approval at their regular pay.

Working Conditions

Work in a shift environment with walking, bending, reaching, and prolonged time outside.

Work is conducted at a men’s correctional facility and includes daily interaction and proximity to adults in custody. This position’s schedule is to be set at the time of hire.

Requirements For Employment

You must be able to pass a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) fingerprint-based background check and maintain CJIS eligibility. Due to CJIS requirements related to system access, the following convictions are likely to result in being disqualified for this position: felony convictions, computer theft, identify theft and fraud. CJIS clearance is done at the conditional job offer.

The salary range listed above is for non-PERS qualifying applicants. PERS qualifying applicants may be eligible for an adjusted range to reflect an additional 6.95%.
