Position Overview

The Fundamental Physics Directorate is looking for a Principal Science & Engineering Mechanical Technician to provide technical support of the multiple FPD projects, joining a fast paced, result driven, enthusiastic team.

The work includes the assembly, fabrication , test, measurement, troubleshooting, and maintenance of complex mechanical, electro-mechanical, or vacuum and cryogenic systems where the application of advanced technological skills, scientific principles, and creativity are required. The Technician works with minimal supervision on assignments involving complete systems as well as components, modules or subsystems as directed by science and engineering teams or FPD management.

Your Specific Responsibilities Include

  • Layout and fabricate prototype circuits, modify existing equipment from schematics and verbal instructions, fabricate and assemble mechanical assemblies meeting science goals and requirements.
  • Trouble-shoot, repair, maintain, and evaluate equipment, or systems
  • Work on the installation of equipment, cables and wiring, general facility preparation and documentation, and experimental set-up including start-up and shut-down activities according to prescribed procedures.
  • Perform equipment lifts and movements according to approved procedures, lift plans and JSA (Job Safety Agreements).
  • Assist in design, component selection, layout, and fabrication of a particular assembly. Engineering assistance is provided when unusual problems are present.
  • Trouble-shoot a system failure and tracing the fault through subsystem and module levels to component level using engineering and scientist assistance, giddiness and direction.
  • Facility operation, in addition to such tasks as set-up, preparation of operational procedures, data analysis.
  • Perform test and calibration methods and procedures
  • Assign and explain tasks to less experienced technicians, inspect work for conformance with specifications, promotes the smooth flow of work by the group, and records information on work performed.
  • May monitor project schedules (as established by the project engineer), procure parts and material, generate shop orders, and test, evaluate, and interconnect subsystems.
  • May be required to work from conceptual engineering specifications rather than detailed drawings, sketches, or instructions.
  • Write job orders for installations, prepare purchase requisitions, document system details, prepare simple cost estimates or assist the professional staff with cost analysis.
  • Function as technical liaison with vendors.

To Be Successful In This Position You Will Bring

  • Minimum eight years of work experience in performing troubleshooting, repair, and calibration of complex mechanical, x-ray or high energy equipment.
  • Ability to make basic engineering calculations on various parameters relevant to component, assembly, instrument, or system design.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate in technical terms with engineers and scientists and to instruct and direct the work of others.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical fixtures, stress and safety related design issues.
  • Demonstrated experience using shop hand tools, meters,

  • Good interpersonal skills and strong communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Experience with MS Office:
    • Experience with formulas and multi-sheet lookups in MS Excel
    • Experience with MS Word formatting and entry
  • Experience working as part of a collaborative team.

Physical requirements and working conditions:

Note: This position is represented by SEIU Local 2007 and the collective bargaining agreement between the university and SEIU Local 2007 governs the terms and conditions of employment.

The expected pay range for this position is $52.81 (Step 1) - $64.03 (Step 10) per hour. Placement in the range is subject to the applicable Collective Bargaining Unit. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
