BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION (essential Functions Of The Job)
Under direction, the Senior Traffic Engineer will perform professional traffic engineering work utilizing good engineering judgment in adherence to city/state/federal standards, guidelines, and policies.
Responsibilities
Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Design, manage, and produce traffic engineering plans and studies using computer-assisted design and engineering software.
- Conduct feasibility studies for the installation of traffic control devices.
- Analyze crash data and prepare plans for safety improvements.
- Provide comprehensive review of plans, reports, and traffic impact studies developed by teammates, consultants, and/or other public agencies to ensure safe and efficient travel for all modes.
- Direct and administer data collection contracts.
- Review and respond to constituent requests in a timely and professional manner.
- Attend public meetings as representative of the Department and work with neighborhood groups to improve parking, traffic flow, and transportation safety throughout the City.
- Direct and supervise other engineer's activities.
- Perform related duties as required.
May be required to work during an emergency as determined by the Commissioner or designee.
Minimum Entrance Qualifications
- Four (4) years of traffic engineering experience, two (2) years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity. A bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering is preferred and may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience.
- Working knowledge of the MUTCD, HCM, AASHTO, and Complete Streets guidelines, as well as proficiency with Synchro, SimTraffic, and AutoCAD software packages.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or Engineer in Training (EIT) certificate is preferred.
- Experience in successfully completing traffic engineering projects (such as sign & pavement marking plans, traffic & construction management plans, traffic impact studies, safety studies, pedestrian and bicycle facility projects, complete streets design projects, traffic operations analysis, intersection design projects, etc.).
- Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
- Must have and maintain a current and valid Massachusetts driver's license at the time of hire.
The work schedule may be modified from time to time and will include evening, night time and weekend hours, to be determined at the discretion of the Department.
