The work you'll do is more than just a job.

At the State of Minnesota, employees play a critical role in developing policies, providing essential services, and working to improve the well-being and quality of life for all Minnesotans. The State of Minnesota is committed to equity and inclusion, and invests in employees by providing benefits, support resources, and training and development opportunities.

The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented student worker to support the Injury and Violence Epidemiology (IVE) Unit staff in vital activities related to the Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (SUID) and Sudden Death in the Young (SDY) Case Registry. Every year in Minnesota, approximately 100 cases of SUID and SDY (up to age 19) occur among individuals who were previously in good health or had stable conditions not expected to cause death. As a recipient of a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) grant, MDH is tasked with documenting these deaths, identifying potential causes, and implementing prevention strategies. Your work in this role will directly support these efforts. This position offers an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in public health while contributing to critical efforts aimed at understanding and preventing unexpected deaths in infants and youth.

Primary Responsibilities will include:

  • Assist with record ascertainment and record abstraction for SUID and SDY cases.
  • Perform data entry and ensure accuracy in maintaining the case registry.
  • Support database management tasks, including updates and quality control.
  • Collaborate with IVE Unit staff to investigate potential cardiac or neurological causes of death.
  • Participate in other essential tasks and activities related to the SUID and SDY Case Registry.

This position is eligible for telework to applicants who reside in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, North Dakota or South Dakota. Position locations will be determined by the top candidate and will be based out of one of the following MDH district office locations: St. Paul, St. Cloud, Duluth, Rochester, Mankato, Marshall, Bemidji, Fergus Falls. The option of teleworking will be based on the business needs of the unit and is at supervisory discretion.

This position is part-time and will work 20 hours per week. The specific hours and days of work are flexible within 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. This position is anticipated to last up to three years or until the selected candidate completes their educational program, whichever occurs sooner.
