Summary/Objective

Job Description:

The Sports Clinician promotes the academic, social, and emotional well-being of student athletes by providing assessment, time-limited individual counseling/psychotherapy, group therapy, crisis intervention, outreach, consultation, referrals, and participation in rotation of after-hours emergency coverage. The Sport Clinical is an employee of the American University Center for Well-Being and is embedded in the athletics department where 85% of their responsibilities will be performed. The Sports Clinician also provides training and supervision using an integrative orientation for clinical trainees in a graduate level psychology program (including an APA-accredited internship); and participates in activities throughout the university. The person in this position adheres to all relevant ethical, legal, and professional standards.

  • Direct Clinical Services: Provides direct clinical services, such as individual or group counseling, crisis intervention, intakes, and consultations, in order to assess and address the emotional concerns of student athletes, promote a supportive and knowledgeable community with regard to mental health issues, and facilitate student athletes’ connection to the support or treatment they require. Additionally, design and implement individual sport psychology strategies related to sport and performance specific skills, and mental health crisis intervention.
  • Consultation and Outreach: Provides training and outreach programs/services to student-athletes. Develops and presents various workshops for multiple audiences including but not limited to individual teams, all student-athletes, coaches, and staff members. Leads educational sessions for coaches, staff, and student-athletes related to best practices and industry-leading programming. Coordinates usage of web-based app used for mental health screening and as a resource tool for Student-Athletes used in part to adhere to NCAA standards around mental health screening for all athletes.
  • Sports Performance Services: Provides consultation and evidence-based performance interventions to decrease performance anxiety and other mental health issues that affect sports engagement. Provides assessment and execution of skills to maximize performance.
  • After-Hours Emergency Coverage: Provides after-hours emergency coverage as required.
  • Clinical Training and Supervision: Provides clinical training and supervision to graduate student clinicians, including individual or group supervision, and seminar presentations. Participates in other activities related to the clinical training programs of the Center, such as trainee selection, orientation, and evaluation.
  • Professional Participation: Participates in program development, review and development of policies and procedures, staff meetings, and other activities affecting the efficient and effective functioning of the Center. Participates in Center, division, or university committees or task groups. Participates in activities related to university employment, such as HR training and the performance management process. Participates in peer supervision, professional development, or other training to develop and refine professional skills and knowledge. Participates in CARE meetings – and or other collaborative meetings between all sports performance areas. Works with academics & Head Coaches focusing on Student-Athlete action items to holistically improve performance in the classroom, community and competitive arena.

Salary Range

  • $76,000 - $86,000/year

Required Education And Experience

  • Master's degree
  • Master's or doctoral degree in clinical or counseling, psychology, mental health counseling, social work, or related field required. Licensed to practice as an independent practitioner in the District of Columbia at the time of hire
  • 1-3 years of relevant experience

Preferred Education And Experience

  • Master's degree

  • 3-5 years of relevant experience
  • Current state licensure or eligible for state license upon hire.
  • Excellent personal qualities and skills (e.g. oral and written communication, organizational, interpersonal, and analytical) that enable effective interaction with athletic staff, sport medicine staff, colleagues, administrators, faculty and student-athletes.
  • Strong commitment to, and training in, working with culturally diverse individuals.
  • Self-motivated and disciplined, flexible and able to respond well to change and to intervene in mental health crises.
  • Ability to work within a multidisciplinary treatment team and to case manage referrals to campus and community partners.
  • Knowledge of NCAA, and industry rules and regulations.
  • Maintain industry standard certifications, licensure, CEU’s, etc.
  • Experience working with Division I collegiate (and/or elite) athletes.
  • APA-accredited doctoral training program and internship preferred.
  • AASP certified as a Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) preferred.
  • Training and experience in alcohol and substance abuse assessment and treatment preferred.
  • Experience with clinical mental health programming for student-athletes and coaches preferred.
  • Experience working in a multidisciplinary healthcare team preferred.
  • Experience with Titanium Software System preferred.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

Licensed or license-eligible as a Psychologist, Social Worker, Professional Counselor, or other relevant licensure in the District of Columbia at the time of hire.
