The Broward County Board of County Commissioners Transportation Department is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Transit Paint and Body Technician in Bus Maintenance.

**Must be able to work varying shifts (days, afternoons, nights, weekends, and holidays) at multiple work locations.**

General Description

Performs skilled technical work in the repair of all body and structural damage to County vehicles to include repair and replacement of structural portions of vehicle framework, welding, repair and replacement of body parts, body part fabrication, sanding, fiberglassing and use of body fillers, body straightening, paint preparation, and spray painting.

Works independently using general and specialized hand and power tools, and precision tools for transit vehicle repair body and painting work. Supervision is received orally and through written job orders from Lead Mechanic or Shift Supervisor who reviews work in progress and upon completion for established operational requirements.

Transit Paint and Body Technician wage increases are determined by the Amalgamated Transit Union, Local 1267 Collective Bargaining Agreement. Starting hourly pay and increases are as follows.

1st Year: $29.10

2nd Year: $29.90

3rd Year: $30.72

4th Year: $31.56

Thereafter Step: $43.53

Minimum Education And Experience Requirements

Two (2) years technical experience in automotive paint and body work or closely related experience

Necessary Requirements

Possession of a Valid Driver's License

Willingness and availability to work varying shifts in a 24/7 operation as assigned (days, afternoons, nights, weekends, and holidays)

Ability to report to multiple work locations as needed

Special Certifications And Licenses

Possession of a valid Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) with Air Brake and Passenger Transport Endorsement or Commercial Driver Learner's Permit with Air Brake and Passenger Transport Endorsement

Preferences

EPA 608 Certification

Vocational/Technical School/College Certification in field of study closely related to area of assignment

Supplemental Information

Upon selection, candidates must successfully complete pre-employment screening (criminal background check, physical, drug screen, employment verification, and any other Broward County Transportation Department requirements).

Duties And Responsibilities

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the job as necessary.

Performs thorough disassembly of vehicles and notifies estimators and/or production manager of any additional/hidden damage

Performs welding, unibody/full frame repairs, non-structural/structural sheet metal replacement repairs, and corrosion protection per manufacturers guidelines

Removes accessories from vehicles, such as chrome or mirrors, and masks other surfaces with tape or paper for protection from paint

Removes grease, dirt, paint, and rust from vehicle surfaces in preparation for paint application using abrasives, solvents, brushes, blowtorches, washing tanks, or sandblasters

Fills cavities and dents with putty to attain smooth surface

Mixes paint to match color specifications or vehicles' original colors, stirs and thins paints using spatula or power mixing equipment

Pours paint into spray guns and adjusts nozzles and paint mixes for proper paint flow and coating thickness.

Sprays prepared surfaces with specified amounts of primers and decorative or finish coatings

Sands vehicle surfaces between coats of paint and/or primer to remove flaws and enhance adhesion for subsequent coats

Adjusts controls on infrared ovens, heat lamps, portable ventilators, and exhaust units to speed the drying of vehicles between coats

Sands final finish, and applies sealer after vehicle has dried properly

Disassembles, cleans, and reassembles sprayers and power equipment, using solvents, wire brushes, and cloths for cleaning duties

Lays out logos, symbols, or designs on painted surfaces according to blueprint specifications, using measuring instruments, stencils, and patterns

Sets up portable equipment such as ventilators, exhaust units, ladders, and scaffolding

Maintains and wears all required safety and health personal protective equipment, including respirator, in the manner recommended by equipment manufacturer.

Operates lifting and moving devices to move equipment or materials so areas to be painted are accessible

Maintains records of work performed and inputs data into the maintenance management software program (AssetWorks)

Operates machinery including, but not limited to, forklift, man lift, power tools, etc.

Understands, keeps abreast of, and complies with federal, state, and local regulations affecting body shop operations, such as hazardous waste disposal, OSHA Right-to-Know, etc.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Physical Demands

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

Performs medium to heavy work that involves walking, standing, stooping, lifting, pushing and raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 to 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis

Unavoidable Hazards (Work Environment)

Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.

Involves routine and frequent exposureto toxic/caustic chemicals, traffic and moving machinery.
