Overview
The
Heavy-Duty Janitor will be responsible for both general and specialty cleaning services, i.e., those janitorial services that involve heavy lifting or strenuous activities, in all common areas in designated buildings including hallways, bathrooms, conference rooms, and offices.
This position would work on site at 626 Wallace Rd, Pittsburgh, PA 15236 and be making
$22.76 per hour + Union benefits, including a pension. Additionally, there is an opportunity to work out of classification, at a higher payrate if qualified.
Responsibilities
- Operate floor scrubbers and other equipment to clean and disinfect designated building interior and exterior including floors, carpets, rugs, upholstery, windows, walls, ceilings.
- Carry out heavy cleaning tasks and special projects that may require manipulating heavy objects.
- Able to lift heavy objects or equipment up to 50 pounds, and able to work at elevations above 8 feet using ladders or scaffold, and occasionally operate or perform work using scissors or aerial lifts.
- Good organizational, verbal, and written communication skills, perform facility inspections, document findings, and notify management of unsafe conditions, facility deficiencies or items needing repaired.
- Monitor stock, maintain supply room organization, and submit supply requests as needed.
- Ability to use and make minor adjustments to janitorial power equipment applicable to trade.
- Fill-in other janitorial vacancies as needed.
- Other duties as assigned to insure timely project execution.
Qualifications
- Good attendance, interpersonal skills, and the ability to work as part of a team or independently.
- Able to read, write, understand, and follow verbal and written instructions.
- Work safely under general supervision, exercise good judgement, and manage time to complete assignments.
- Basic computer skills and ability to use Microsoft Outlook email, payroll time entry, and complete required online training.
- Must have a valid U.S. driver's license and demonstrate a good driving record (no significant violations such as DUI, loss of license, inability to obtain personal insurance or currently covered under a high-risk insurance policy, etc.).
- Assist others by training / mentoring, teamwork.
- Escort and monitor work performed by outside vendors in accordance with facility requirements.
- Complete and return required administrative paperwork on time as directed, (e.g., timesheets, vacation slips, classroom and computer-based training, log sheets, PM / PE / MODs, service records etc.)
Preferred Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent and at least two (2) years’ relevant job experience.
- Knowledge of OSHA 10 safety guidelines, various cleaning products and their applications.

- All regular, non-temporary positions assigned to this classification are represented by a labor union and subject to the terms and conditions of the IUOE Local 95 Collective Bargaining Agreement.
- Able to work nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.

Work Environment/Physical Demands
Work Environment
- Most positions involve work in environments (e.g., projects, labs, outside locations, etc. where mechanical equipment is being installed, tested, analyzed, monitored, or operated and / or maintained. Equipment may be loud and noisy and or have exposed moving components.
- Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks which requires following basic safety precautions.
Physical and Mental Demands
- Requires heavy physical activity to include working at heights, climbing stairs, ladders, scaffolds, and using scissors or aerial lifts.
- Constant use of vision and mental alertness is required working in all types of weather (heat, humidity, sub-zero cold).
- Able to perform all the typical repetitive physical requirements such as: walking, pushing, pulling, handling, grasping, kneeling, working overhead, and routine carrying up to 50 pounds.
- Able to work in awkward positions for extended periods of time or in confined spaces.
- Must be able to read, write, and speak fluent English to respond to visual and audible alarms.
- Participation in an annual medical evaluation is required.

- Know and follow environmental, safety, and health (ES&H) policies and procedures that apply to their job assignments.
- Become knowledgeable of and maintain awareness of the ES&H hazards associated with their work.
- Perform work safely in accordance with hazard controls.
- Report all unsafe operations, and, if necessary, exercise stop-work authority in cases of imminent danger.
- Work only on those tasks in which they have the required competence, training, skills, and abilities to prevent injury to one’s-self, other employees, the public, or the environment.
- Must wear proper PPE as required and ensure PPE is in acceptable condition.
- Maintain active involvement in the introduction, revision, and/or promotion of ES&H/ISM program activities.
Hours of Work
- Typical shift is 8 hours per day, Monday through Friday. afternoon schedule (1:00 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.) and must be able to occasionally work after hours on nights, holidays, and weekends.
- Schedule is determined by the company and business needs.
