Job Summary
Incumbents in this position are referred to as Hospital Lab Technicians. Under the general supervision of the Medical Directors, Site Managers and the section Supervisors, depending on rotation, the incumbent performs a variety of tasks in any Divisions in the Pathology Department. Receives, accessions and distributes tissue (histopathological), cytological and administrative cases answers telephones, completes a daily morgue report, sets up frozen section areas, retrieves samples from the PeriOp areas, stores and discards tissue samples. May prepare or “gross in” specified surgical specimens, which includes biopsies and larger specimens: examines the specimen grossly, weighs, measures, fixes, inks, cuts representative samples, cassettes and submits the specimens for histological processing, dictates clinical description for report transcription, contacts clinicians/surgeons regarding clinical information, and enters information into the Pathology computer system. Processes a variety of specimen types including biopsies and specified non-complex specimens. Performs frozen sectioning/staining for rapid diagnosis by the pathologist; assists with specimen photography; and other technical duties as needed. Must be able to work variable schedules and rotate at other sites as needed. Incumbent may also assist with autopsies and other Morgue duties, embed tissues and other duties in Histology, and perform tasks in the Cytology or Electron Microscopy Laboratories or Administrative areas. Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
- Completion of a Bachelor’s degree, or two years of college and applicable pathology department experience, or five years’ experience working in a hospital pathology department.
- This position requires flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.
- Knowledge of Windows applications.
- Ability to understand the complexities within a specialty department.
- Successful completion of APeX registration training within the first 6 months of hire.
- Excellent data entry, word processing, spelling, grammar, and editing skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Ability to organize and prioritize responsibilities and perform well under pressure to meet deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in biological science with experience in hospital gross room setting.
- Completion of an approved clinical laboratory training program, or at least 3 months documented laboratory training in Surgical Pathology grossing.
- Previous work experience in Pathology department.
- Coursework in Biology/Anatomy.
- Previous experience working in Pathology or a medical laboratory environment.
- Working knowledge of APeX and/or CoPath systems.
- May be trained to gross in specimens in categories 1-3 if HLT III educational requirements are met and operational need exists. Consideration for reclassification after specimen competencies are met.
