Pay And Benefits
Annual Pay Range: $27.44 - $28.40
Hourly Pay Range: $57,075.20 - $59,072.00
Salary offers will be made within the posted pay range and will be based on a candidate's experience (paid or unpaid) that is directly relevant to the position.

JOB DETAILS AND QUALIFICATIONS
Clackamas Water Environment Services (WES) is searching for a motivated individual to join our dedicated team at the Kellogg Creek Water Resource Recovery Facility in Milwaukie, Oregon, as a
Wastewater Plant Operator Trainee. Ideal candidates will possess strong communication and interpersonal skills, as well as a team-oriented approach to work. This is an ideal opportunity for entry-level applicants to begin and build upon a career in wastewater plant operations!
If selected for this position, you will assist with and learn to perform a full range of wastewater plant operation tasks under the instruction of WES plant operators, and as an active participant in a training program. Key components of this position include operating wastewater treatment plant equipment, performing routine maintenance and cleaning, planning, monitoring, evaluating and adjusting the treatment process, and participating as an important member of the team coordinating/overseeing plant operations and maintenance.
Growth and Advancement Opportunities: The Wastewater Plant Operator series is part of a promotional career path within Clackamas Water Environment Services. Incumbents in the Wastewater Plan Operator Trainee classification may be promoted to a Wastewater Plant Operator 1 classification upon successful completion of an approved training and development plan. Possession of the required certification, knowledge, skills and abilities at the higher level must be documented in an approved promotional evaluation and the established training plan.

Required Minimum Qualifications/ Transferrable Skills:*
- A High School Diploma or GED
- Experience providing excellent customer service and answering customer questions and/or complaints
- Experience operating hand tools and power tools necessary to maintain and operate equipment
- Experience applying safety precautions and performing all tasks within the established safety protocols
- Some knowledge of basic wastewater treatment and operations
- Some knowledge of Federal and state laws, regulations and permit requirements regarding wastewater treatment
- Must be able to respond to after-hours emergencies on a call-out basis
Preferred Special Qualifications/ Transferrable Skills:*
- Experience and/or education in wastewater treatment or related utility operations
- Associate's Degree in Wastewater Technology, Chemistry, Microbiology or a related field
- Experience monitoring, troubleshooting, and diagnosing equipment malfunctions and taking or recommending appropriate corrective action
- Confined Space Entry certification
- CPR/First Aid certification
Pre-Employment Requirements
- Must pass a post-offer physical assessment; accommodation requests will be reviewed on an individual bases in compliance with State and Federal legislation.

Requirements include :

TYPICAL TASKS
Duties may include but are not limited to the following:
- Learns and assists in the operation of equipment used in the preliminary, primary, secondary, tertiary and solids treatment of wastewater; learns to operate, inspect, clean, adjust, calibrate and monitor equipment and instruments and make minor repairs.
- Learns and assists in the monitoring and operation of the wastewater treatment process in accordance with permit and process control standards; measures biological and chemical levels and liquid flow; measures inventories of process; troubleshoots and resolves process problems.
- Learns and assists in collecting liquid and solid waste samples; learns to perform standard and non-standard biological and chemical tests for troubleshooting or research work; records results.
- Learns and assists in taking and recording process lab and flow readings; enters and downloads data to recordkeeping systems.
- Learns how to keep assigned area(s) clean and hazard-free; uses safe work practices and follows established safety policies and procedures.
Required Knowledge And Skills
Some knowledge of: Basic wastewater treatment and operations; safe work practices in an industrial and/or wastewater setting; occupational and health safety practices, rules and regulations; basic math; English grammar, spelling and punctuation; standard office equipment, use of computers, computer applications and mobile devices.
Skill to: Take direction and continuous feedback; establish and maintain professional effective working relationships with customers, contractors, County employees and the public; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; follow instructions; participate as a team member; represent the County professionally; keep accurate records and logs; use computers and related software; operate basic hand tools.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Duties require physical labor, including walking, reaching, squatting, kneeling, bending, balancing, climbing, shoveling, fine motor control, and ability to lift up to 50 pounds, carry, and push/pull up to 70 pounds.
- Duties also involve exposure to bacteria, viruses and toxins in wastewater, chemicals, exhaust fumes and dust, loud noises, and vibration.
- Some duties involve exposure to adverse weather conditions and hazardous locations, such as streets, live sewers, confined underground areas and on elevated platforms.
- Incumbents may perform after-hours emergency response on a callout basis.
WORK SCHEDULE
This position works 40 hours during a standard workweek of Tuesday through Saturday, from 6:00 am - 2:30 pm:
- Specific hours of work will be discussed with the candidate selected for this position at the time an offer of employment is extended.
- Work location is Kellogg Creek Water Resource Recovery Facility (11525 SE McLoughlin Blvd, Milwaukie, OR).
- This position is designated as on-site/in-person. It is expected that the selected candidate will perform duties at the specified on-site work location.

About The Department
Clackamas Water Environment Services produces clean water and protects water quality for more than 190,000 people living and working in Clackamas County. We operate and maintain five resource recovery facilities, 23 pumping stations and hundreds of miles of pipes.
Each year, we clean more than seven billion gallons of water which we recover and turn into natural energy and fertilizer. We also help reduce pollution in local rivers, streams, and wetlands caused by surface and stormwater runoff, the number one source of water pollution in Oregon.
