Position Purpose
Under minimal supervision from the Carpentry Shop Supervisor or the Lead Carpenter, the Carpenter A completes high quality carpentry projects requiring attention to function and durability. Working alone or in a group, applies the full range of carpentry skills and techniques to repair, construct, alter, or maintain the wood and wood-substitute components of buildings and a wide variety of structures. May assist in the construction and repair of structures for which appearance, as well as durability and function, are important such as doors, windows, and furniture.

Carpenters are necessary for initial lay out to final assembly and/or installation and upkeep of buildings/furniture etc.

Required Qualifications - Education and Yrs Exp High School plus 5+ years' experience or equivalent combination of education and experience

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge And Abilities
  • High School graduate or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license and be qualified under the terms of the Dartmouth College Driver Safety and Motor Vehicle Policy.
  • Three- to five-year apprenticeship in carpentry and four- to six years of relevant, progressive carpentry experience; or the equivalent.
  • Must possess own hand tools.
  • Ability to perform moderate to heavy physical labor, including lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 75 pounds.
  • Ability to work at heights.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of and skill in all aspects of the Carpenter’s trade.
  • Knowledge of shop mathematics and skill to plan and measure materials according to requirements and dimensions outlined in instructions and to compute complex and exact projects with features such as arcs, tangents, and circles.
  • Skill in the use of tapes, rulers, and squares.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply building plans, specifications, blueprints and sketches of all levels of complexity.
  • Knowledge of the basic components and purposes of a wide variety of structures, so as to ensure strength, support, and fit of assemblies.
  • Skill in maintaining tools, including sharpening methods.
  • Skill in the use of hand tools and equipment such as hammers, hand saws, planes, screw drivers, power saws, and power planes.
  • Knowledge of all applicable safety regulations and procedures. Willingness to work overtime when required.
  • Strong customer service orientation.
  • Must have successfully completed the following training prior to performing work to which the training relates: Driver Safety Hazard Communication Lock-out/Tag-out Asbestos training Ladder, scaffolding and lift training, Personal Protective Equipment ( PPE ) training

Responsibilities
  • Working independently, plans and completes projects from initial layout to final assembly or installation.
  • Under general supervision from a Master Carpenter, completes projects of greater complexity. Independently reads, interprets, and applies complex specifications, blueprints and sketches.
  • Selects lumber, materials, and supplies required to complete assigned work Measures, cuts, and installs materials to the required lengths. Installs rafters, studs, sills, plates, braces, joists, floors, sheet rock, plywood, siding, sheathing, roofing, building paper, and insulating materials
  • Fabricates and installs frames or casings for windows, doors, transoms, and ventilators. Fabricates shelves, counters, bulletin boards, cabinets, bookcases, and related features having built-in characteristics. Installs structural and trim items by nailing, bolting, mortising, doweling, and gluing.
  • Insures that installed components are level and accurately aligned with other parts of the structure. Trims, mortises, drills, and prepares items for attachment of hardware.
  • Applies caulking compound or other filler material around door and window casings and at other points where tight seal is required. Files, gums, sets, joins, tensions, and brazes saw blades.
  • Planes, sands, putties, holds and finishes completed work.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
