MAINTENANCE WORKER - PARKS DEPARTMENT: MAINTENANCE SERVICES DEPARTMENT AFSCME LABOR GRADE 4 SHIFT: FIRST SHIFT SUMMARY: Under general supervision, performs routine maintenance and repair of park facilities and ground; operates power mowers, trimmers, small utility tractor and trucks; performs other duties as assigned. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (which are not in any hierarchical order) Maintains the park facilities and grounds by mowing and trimming turf, cutting/trimming trees and shrubbery, spraying weed killer, picking up refuse and brush, cleaning and repairing restrooms and shelters. Operates lawn tractors, trucks and other park maintenance equipment in conjunction with snow plowing or ice pond maintenance. Operates hand tools, including shovel, rake, broom, hammer, wrench, etc. Performs "confined space" duties. Performs work zone safety procedures. Utilizes and wears proper protective gear and equipment. Occasionally operates city owned vehicles, including trucks and equipment, to load, haul and spread materials. Maintains and services city-owned vehicles and equipment utilized in park facilities area. Maintains flower beds by planting, watering and cultivating soil and plants. Performs manual tasks by shoveling asphalt, sand, concrete, gravel and snow by hand. Provides direction and instructions to seasonal maintenance employees. Performs repairs to buildings, structures and playground equipment. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS: Knowledge of the function of basic hand and power tools, machinery utilized for grounds and building maintenance. Knowledge of the chemical contents of sprays utilized on the grounds. Knowledge of OSHA regulations and safe work practices. Ability to utilize various basic hand and power tools, machinery and cleaning supplies in the maintenance area. Ability to ensure safe work environment. Ability to perform unskilled tasks in construction or maintenance activities. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to work in inclement weather conditions. Ability to effectively communicate with those contacted throughout the course of the workday. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other departments, agencies, employees, supervisors and the public. Skill in operating and maintaining smaller parks maintenance power equipment. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT: There is frequent need to sit, drive; there is moderate need to stand, walk, climb, twist, bend, stoop, talk or hear, use hands to finger, lift up to and over fifty (50); and perform other similar actions during the course of the workday.
