The UW School of Dentistry’s (SoD) Department of Pediatric Dentistry, located at Magnuson Park, is the region’s premiere authority on children’s oral health. The Department of Pediatric Dentistry at the SoD has an opening for a part-time Social Work Position (NE S SEIU 925 HCP/LT)(50% FTE, 20 hours/week).
Under the general direction of the Director of Clinical Operations of Department of Pediatric Dentistry, this individual will provide leadership in developing and implementing a social work case management program.
The social worker will help identify and overcome barriers to oral health care of culturally diverse low-income children and their caregivers. The social worker will leverage the resources of the Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnostic, and Treatment (EPSDT) program to facilitate access to dental care for patients, help overcome institutional barriers, and foster collaboration between providers and families.
Duties And Responsibilities
This individual will have in-depth knowledge of the Department’s oral health initiatives and programs. They will work independently and in cooperation with other department staff in a fast-paced, high-volume environment. Through social work case management, they will:
Determine barriers to patients receiving needed dental care
- Advocate for patients and assist caregivers with navigation of the health care system.
- Consult with providers and staff to identify and resolve patient and/or family systemic and psychosocial barriers to care (including working with Child Protective Services, Washington State Children’s Administration).
- Utilize a biopsychosocial assessment model to determine patient strengths and needs when conducting case management services.
Facilitate attendance to dental visits at UW Pediatric Dentistry
- Schedule Medicaid transportation and help arrange for gasoline vouchers with brokers (in 30+ counties).
- Follow-up with families who have had challenges attending visits, providing resources to improve attendance.
Reduce financial barriers to dental care
- Assess barriers to patient use of Medicaid for oral health care.
- Work with patient services and billing staff on financial assistance options - including department charity care fund (Peter K. Domoto Fund for Children).
- Inform patient families about Apple Health for Kids (Medicaid) and assist with Medicaid applications.
- Provide brokers with letters of medical necessity for Medicaid services.
Assist with coordination of services between UW Pediatric Dentistry and other care providers within and outside the UW SOD System
- Support Interdisciplinary Special Needs Dental Access Network (I-SPAN) grant patient care initiatives.
- Document Medicaid activities for Access to Baby and Child Dentistry (ABCD) funding.
- Refer families to Help Me Grow WA (HMGWA) for additional support.
Implement new policies and procedures to increase quality of care for patients
- Update clinic lobby, translate documentation, and create care packages for patients and families.
- Research and coordinate with clinic staff to update patient forms.
- Develop referral system between providers and social work services.
Minimum Requirements
Bachelor of Social Work or a Bachelor's Degree in the behavioral sciences AND two years experience as a Social Work Assistant I or equivalent.
OR
An Associate of Arts Degree in the behavioral sciences AND four years of work experience as a Social Work Assistant I or equivalent.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- A working knowledge of the Medicaid system, preferably with knowledge of the children’s Medicaid benefit— Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnostic, and Treatment (EPSDT) program.
- At least six months of experience advocating for the rights of low-income families and children in Washington State.
- Must demonstrate success and experience working directly with socially culturally diverse families and children, including those with developmental disabilities.
- Must be able to react to patient family events decisively and effectively under pressure.
- Legal Requirement - Registration as a Counselor by the State of Washington within 30 days of employment or other licensing.
