Job Summary

The College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA), and the Department of Comparative Literature at the University of Michigan invite applications for one Lecturer I at 33.0% effort for the Fall 2024 term. This appointment is scheduled to begin on August 26, 2024 and end on December 31, 2024.

We seek qualified applicants to teach discussion sections for COMPLIT 322: Translating World Literatures. This position is pending enrollment demand.

Course Description

COMPLIT 322: This course provides an opportunity for students to use their skills in a foreign language to think about the history, theory, and practice of translating literary texts, and to work on a translation project of their own choosing. The course is structured around a series of critical and creative writing assignments. The course also includes a range of readings in translation studies, with an emphasis on the cultural function of translation and the role of the translator in cross-cultural communication.

Responsibilities*

The successful candidate must prepare a syllabus with standing course requirements; be available to teach one weekly lecture and lead one weekly discussion section; hold regularly scheduled weekly office hours for individual consultation with students; evaluate student writing; and evaluate and grade student materials. Attend instructor training scheduled for Thursday, August 22, 2024. A typical full-time (100% effort) load for a Lecturer I in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts is three courses per semester.

Required Qualifications*

PhD in a relevant field such as Comparative Literature or expertise in one or more non-European literatures preferred. The selection criteria used for this search is based on how the applicant's education and experience meets the required minimum qualifications for the position. Excellence in teaching and instruction will be the principal criteria used to select the successful candidate.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Applicants should also demonstrate extensive knowledge of world literature and translation studies methodologies.
  • Applicants should demonstrate previous experience in teaching writing to undergraduate students
  • Applicants who have taught COMPLIT 322 as the instructor of record to meet the upper-level writing requirement during the last five years
