Job Summary

Operates the boiler(s) and maintains a variety of mechanical equipment such as heating, ventilating and/or air-conditioning apparatus at an assigned secondary school facility in collaboration with the Complex Engineer. Responsible for maintaining sanitary, security, and safety standards through planning and overseeing the general cleaning and operation of the facility.

Additional Work Days/Hours

Based on the assignment, the following additional work days and/or hours may be required as needed:

  • Emergencies
  • Evenings/Nights
  • Inclement weather conditions
  • Overtime as needed
  • Summer hours

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • Makes minor repairs and emergency repairs and adjustments such as cleaning clogged plumbing fixtures and replacing electric bulbs, ballasts, and fuses.
  • Prepares the facility to open by inspecting facility and grounds to ensure maintenance, safety, sanitary, and security standards have been met.
  • Operates boiler and maintains all types of mechanical equipment in the facility including checking and logging readings from gauges for proper functioning of all aspects of boiler operations; checks water level or steam pressure to ensure safe operation; and performs all safety checks (blowing down of boilers, testing safety valves).
  • Maintains records of area inspections, training, inventory, and equipment repairs.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on all equipment including adjusting belts, changing filters, and checking for clogged drains on the roof. Inspects roof top units and exhaust fans and services if needed.
  • Oversees, plans, assigns, and instructs custodians on cleaning procedures and proper use of supplies and equipment as established by Operations.
  • Supervises and participates in the snow removal program as required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.

Education

  • High School Diploma or Equivalency Certificate required.

Experience

  • Four (4) years building mechanical equipment service or operator experience. required;
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities deemed sufficient to prepare the employee to successfully perform the duties of the position.

  • Ability to read and interpret, diagrams, sketches, blueprints, manufactures manuals, drawings, specifications and work orders.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively work and communicate with diverse populations.
  • Ability to employ business technology tools (e.g. E-mail, AACPS Intranet, electronic benefits enrollment tool, Microsoft Office Suite, etc.)

Licenses and Certifications

Employee must retain active licenses, certifications, and enrollment as a condition of employment.

  • Successful completion of Introduction to Operations Equipment & Plant Procedures Course and Certificate issued by AACPS or equivalent outside course required; or
  • First available after appointment Introduction to Operations Equipment & Plant Procedures Course and Certificate issued by AACPS or equivalent outside course required; or
  • Upon hire, 4th Grade Stationary Engineer License issued by Maryland Board of Stationary Engineers required; and
  • Successful completion of Leadership Training or Certificate Course issued by AACPS or equivalent outside course required; or
  • First available after appointment Leadership Training or Certificate Course issued by AACPS or equivalent outside course required.
