Job Summary

A Golf Course Greenskeeper/Mechanic is responsible for maintaining the overall condition and appearance of a golf course, ensuring that it remains in top playing condition. This role combines groundskeeping duties with mechanical maintenance responsibilities, requiring both horticultural knowledge and mechanical skills.

Essential Functions

  • Groundskeeping:
  • Mow, trim, and edge lawns, fairways, greens, and rough areas using various equipment like mowers, edgers, and trimmers.
  • Irrigate turf areas as needed and manage/repair irrigation systems to ensure optimal grass health.
  • Fertilize, aerate, seed, and top-dress greens and other course areas to promote healthy grass growth.
  • Apply pesticides, herbicides, and other treatments to control weeds, insects, and plant diseases, adhering to safety regulations.
  • Prune trees, shrubs, and bushes to maintain landscape aesthetics and prevent hazards.
  • Repair divots, ball marks, and other damage on the course to maintain a smooth playing surface.
  • Clear debris from the course, such as fallen branches, leaves, and trash.
  • Assist in setting up the course for tournaments and special events, including moving tees and hole locations.
  • Ability to operate triplex, 5 reel fairway, and 5 deck riding mowers.
  • Ability to Rake Bunkers, use a string trimmer, and operate a variety of chainsaws for tree work.
  • Mechanical Maintenance:
  • Inspect, diagnose, and repair mechanical issues with golf course equipment, including mowers, tractors, and utility vehicles.
  • Perform regular maintenance tasks, such as oil changes, blade sharpening, belt replacements, and fluid checks, to keep equipment in good working order.
  • Maintain an inventory of parts and supplies needed for equipment repairs and order replacements as necessary.
  • Keep accurate records of maintenance and repairs performed on all equipment.
  • Ensure that all tools and equipment are stored safely and in good condition.
  • Work closely with the golf superintendent to prioritize repairs and schedule equipment servicing to minimize downtime.
  • Follow all Safety and security policies and procedures put forth by the City of Gering, including reporting an accident, injury, or unsafe work practices.

Qualifications

  • Education and Experience:
    • High School Diploma or equivalent.
    • Must be 18 years of age or older.
    • Any combination of education and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Necessary Knowledge and Skills:
  • Proficient in computer use, knowledge in Microsoft Office and other applications.
    • Proficient in operating and maintaining various types of groundskeeping equipment and tools. Strong mechanical skills with the ability to diagnose and repair small engines and other mechanical systems.
    • Understanding of turfgrass management, plant care, and pest control techniques.
    • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting heavy equipment, standing, bending, and working outdoors in various weather conditions.
    • Keen eye for detail to ensure the course is kept in pristine condition and all equipment is properly maintained.
    • Ability to prioritize tasks, work efficiently, and meet deadlines.
    • Knowledge of safety protocols related to equipment use, chemical application, and working in outdoor environments.
    • Knowledge of and/or ability to play the game of golf. Understanding how job performance affects the playing condition of the golf course.
  • Special Requirements:
  • Valid NE Pesticide Applicators License or ability to obtain within 6 months.
  • Valid NE Driver’s License and maintain a safe driving record.
Tools & Equipment Used

A Golf Course Greenskeeper/Mechanic uses a wide range of tools and equipment to maintain the course and keep machinery in top working condition. Below are some of the most used items:

  • Utility vehicles, lawn and landscaping equipment, including a variety of tractors and mowers, aerifier, edgers, weed trimmers, spraying equipment, sprinklers, and irrigation systems.
  • Miscellaneous hand and power tools for turf maintenance and mechanical work such as chainsaw, woodchipper, blade sharpeners or grinders, electric motors or pumps, and welding equipment.
