About the LIU M.F.A. in Writing and Producing For Television
The LIU M.F.A. in Writing and Producing for Television – known as The TV Writers Studio - is a two-year M.F.A. program. The core of our program mirrors the actual experience of being in a TV writers room, and it works roughly like this: At the beginning of the two year program, MFA Director Ken LaZebnik brings in a concept for a TV show. During the first year the students mirror a real TV writers room - building a world, fleshing out characters, creating a series arc, breaking individual stories, writing episodes - all that happens in an actual writers room. By the end of year one, each student has written an episode of this putative series.
In year two, the cohort moves into production. We hire a professional director, DP, casting director, SAG-AFTRA actors, department heads, and shoot an excerpt of our show. (We don’t shoot ten hours of television, but each student selects a scene from the episode they have written to be filmed.) In the spring, we move into post-production and work on editing, sound mixing, etc. By May, we have a finished reel of scenes. In addition to this main project, students write two original pilots, a web series, and a variety of additional classes.
