The College of Engineering, Center for Entrepreneurship at the University of Michigan invites applicants for a part-time LEO Intermittent Lecturer position to teach ENTR 390.103: Space Entrepreneurship during the Fall 2024 term.

Responsibilities*

The Center for Entrepreneurship's courses are the epitome of experiential learning, demonstrative of entrepreneurial mindset, and open to all U-M students across all 19 schools/colleges.

The person in this position will be responsible for teaching ENTR 390.103: Space Entrepreneurship during the Fall 2024 term.

This 3-credit course is designed to provide non-technical students with a foundational understanding of space technology and its intersection with business and regulatory aspects. The course covers key areas such as the fundamentals of space technology, economics, venture capital models, and regulatory frameworks, offering a comprehensive introduction to this multifaceted domain.

The course is organized around a four-arc model, with each arc covering distinct but interconnected topics:

  • Fundamentals of Space Technology
    • Distinguish between science fiction and science fact.
    • Acquire basic knowledge of aerospace engineering.
    • Learn how to contribute to and lead engineering projects in the space sector.
  • Space Business Development
    • Understand public and private partnerships in the space industry.
    • Identify business opportunities in space for existing enterprises.
    • Explore diverse commercial business models.
    • Analyze the business aspects of defense and space science.
    • Evaluate industry talent and career opportunities.
  • Space Funding Models
    • Evaluate various investment opportunities and funding models in the space industry.
  • Space Regulatory, Policy, and Ethics
    • Summarize the international space ecosystem and examine geopolitical considerations.
    • Compare and contrast space laws across different countries.
    • Examine the future of the industry and its relevance to university graduates' career pathways.
Students will develop skills in using the Business Model Canvas to address real-world problems within the space entrepreneurship ecosystem. They will adopt a holistic perspective to evaluate all stakeholders, costs, resource management, potential deployment issues, and the overall value of projects or missions. Additionally, they will learn to design scalable and repeatable models that can be applied to developing other technologies.

The course is scheduled for 15 weeks during the Fall 2024 term. Course faculty will be responsible for preparing course materials and leading a weekly 3-hour interactive in-person lecture, holding office hours weekly, honing assignments and guiding student project teams + individual projects, managing milestones for and grading student projects, and attending the CFE's monthly Faculty Community Meetings.

Required Qualifications*

  • Master's degree in a relevant field (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
  • Demonstrated and successful practice of entrepreneurship and the entrepreneurial process in the defense arena, from idea conception to technology development, fundraising, and growing a team
  • Ability to establish credibility and rapport with students
  • Ability to learn conceptual frameworks quickly and apply them to practical student needs
  • Strong oral presentation and communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate and graduate students in a classroom environment


Desired Qualifications*

  • Advanced degree (Ph.D.) in a relevant field
  • Experience in entrepreneurship (startups or early stage), or intrapreneurship within a larger organization, or commercializing technology
  • Experience with Learning Management Systems (e.g. Canvas)


Additional Information

This position is posted for the Fall 2024 term at 30% effort (12 hours per week).

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Lecturers Employee Organization, AFL-CIO, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
