Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

Basic Requirement: To qualify for the Social Science job series, all applicants must meet at least one of the following degree requirements by the closing date of the job announcement:

Successful completion of a degree in behavioral or social science, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

OR

Equivalent combination of education and experience that provided you with the knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.

OR

Four years of appropriate experience that demonstrates you have acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.

In addition to the basic requirement you must also meet the minimum qualifications for this position:

Time in grade: Under competitive merit promotion procedures, any individual who is currently holding, or who has held within the previous 52 weeks, a General Schedule position under non-temporary appointment in the competitive or excepted service, must meet "time-in-grade" requirements (have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade of the grade for which you are applying). You must include an SF-50 (you may need to submit more than one) that supports meeting this requirement with your application package.

To qualify for the GS-13: Applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 in the Federal and or Public Service. Specialized experience is defined as:

  • Experience using and critiquing advanced social science research methodologies and rigorous study design and analysis techniques to conduct of program evaluation studies and analysis relevant to nutrition assistance or similar social service programs;
  • Experience conducting quantitative and qualitative analyses of the impact of policy options using cost-benefit analysis, statistics, microsimulation, or other complex quantitative methods, including use of statistical programs such as SPSS, SAS, STATA, or R;
  • Experience preparing written documents describing methodology used and results of research or qualitative or quantitative analyses of policy options, including decision memos, regulatory impact analyses, research briefs, and/or journal articles; AND
  • Experience with management of complex projects.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
