Duties

As An Environmental Protection Specialist, You Will:

  • Provide expert technical advice, guidance and recommendations, effectively communicating such to management and other technical specialists throughout the Bureau on critical environmental issues in the assigned specialty area (industrial wastewater and storm water compliance).
  • Develop procedures, manuals and other informational material in support of the environmental compliance programs.
  • Conduct environmental audits of BEP activities to ensure compliance with environmental laws. This includes special environmental risk analyses, value assessments, and/or other assessments and analyses relative to in-house and contract initiatives to provide a base for executive decisions on environmental matters.
  • Review engineering assessments of plans and specifications for new equipment to ensure that environmental factors have been given adequate consideration and needed environmental control devices are incorporated in the modification of existing equipment. Make recommendations to Manager for appropriate disposition.
  • Inspect and survey work places, processes and products for compliance with established environmental standards.

Requirements:

SUITABILITY, CLEARANCE & REQUIREMENTS: A background investigation will be required for all new hires. Qualifications

You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

Specialized Experience For The GS-13 Level Is One Year Of Experience At The GS-12 Level Or Equivalent That Has Equipped You With The Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities To Successfully Perform The Duties Of The Position. Specialized Experience Includes:

  • Experience in developing, managing environmental programs, encompassing industrial wastewater pretreatment or sanitary wastewater treatment, and storm water management while ensuring compliance with local, State, and Federal environmental regulations. AND
  • Serving as technical authority in matters concerning regulatory requirements that relate to industrial wastewater pretreatment or sanitary wastewater treatment, and storm water management; AND
  • Leading or managing a team of employees that operate and maintain an industrial wastewater pretreatment plant or sanitary wastewater treatment plant; or managing a contract for the operations and maintenance of an industrial wastewater pretreatment plant or sanitary wastewater treatment plant.

In addition to the above requirements, you must meet the following time-in-grade requirement, if applicable: For the GS-13, you must have been at the GS-12level for 52 weeks.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • The facility typically shuts down annually between Christmas and New Year's Day. As such, all BEP employees must take leave for workdays during the shutdown period.
  • A one-year probationary period may be required.
