Civil Engineer Specialist - Road Design

Montana Department of Transportation is recruiting a Civil Engineering Specialist in the Road Design area. This position is responsible for complex road design, construction cost estimating, scheduling, and preparation of construction contract plans and proposals. Incumbents work closely with Design Project Managers in all areas of duties assigned including collaboration, mentoring, and providing technical road design support to other project team members and Engineering Division staff. Incumbents have the skill and discipline to work independently, under the supervision and direction of a Design Project Manager. This position is part of the career ladder with career advancement opportunities.

Glendive is the primary location. Miles City, Wolf Point and Glasgow locations will be considered.

Knowledge And Skills

  • Broad knowledge of engineering practices, principles and construction methods, processes and procedures
  • Typically acquired through a combination of education and experience

Entry Level – ($31.04)

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
  • No prior engineering experience required

Mid-Level – ($32.31)

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering
  • Minimum of 6 months - 2 years of related work experience.

Top Level – ($37.36)

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering
  • Minimum of 2-4 years related work experience and
  • Engineering Intern certification or is a licensed Professional Engineer.

Education and experience will determine salary for level placement. Alternative qualifications may be considered: Any combination of additional related work experience and education equivalent to the minimum qualifications.
