Position Description
The Communications Specialist plays a key role in advancing the VEA’s messaging and brand through compelling content, strong editorial oversight, and responsive media engagement. This position helps manage VEA’s publications, supports internal and external communications, and contributes to the overall strategic goals of the Communications and Public Affairs department.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree preferred; equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered
- Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills across formats
- Experience with publication management and content planning
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a deadline-driven environment
- Experience working with printers and production vendors a plus
- Familiarity with media relations or journalism strongly preferred
- Basic graphic design or social media experience is desirable
- Strong commitment to public education, equity, and union values
Core Job Functions
- Plan content, coordinate contributors, write features, edit, and oversee production of Virginia Journal of Education (six issues per year), working closely with printers and vendors
- Research and write weekly editions of The President’s Communiqué e-newsletter
- Draft press releases, speeches, talking points, scripts, membership materials, website copy, and other written content
- Provide proofreading and editorial assistance for the Communications Department and other internal teams
- Collaborate with the Director of Communications on VEA’s media relations strategy, including interview prep, press outreach, and relationship building with media professionals
- Serve as a backup content creator for social media platforms as needed
- Provide communications support to local affiliates, including training delivery at member events and development of local communication strategies
Salary and Fringe Benefits
This position is covered by the Virginia Professional Staff Association (VPSA) Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) 2023–2026 and has a salary range of $80,342–$111,900. We offer a competitive benefits package including:
