Description
Under direction, inspects, logs, and monitors the performance of a wide variety of mechanical, automated, and electrical building infrastructure systems and equipment and, as necessary, performs and/or directs routine to extraordinary preventative maintenance and/or corrective repair. Performs welding, painting, plumbing and carpentry work that may be required in the course of repair/maintenance of facility systems/equipment. May also lead a formal or informal crew of non-certified maintenance staff. Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATIONAL INCENTIVE: Possible educational incentive of 2.5%, 3.5%, or 5% based on completion of Associates, Bachelor's, or Master's degree.

Certified Maintenance Engineers are represented by the International Union of Operating Engineers and are eligible for overtime compensation.
The list established from this recruitment may be used to fill present and future regular positions in the General Services Agency.

Examples Of Duties
Typical duties may include, but are not necessarily limited to:
- Maintains and repairs building infrastructure systems and equipment;
- Operates and makes repairs on boilers, compressors, refrigeration equipment, generators, air conditioning facilities and all appurtenant equipment;
- Repairs/replaces toilet facilities, registers, radiators, lights, fixtures, furniture and floors;
- Uses a variety of hand and power tools daily, frequently works with chemicals;
- Diagnoses (“troubleshoots”) mechanical, electrical and plumbing problems;
- Installs, repairs or redirects electrical circuits as needed;
- Installs/repairs all plumbing or pipe fitting problems including systems that carry/ deliver/drain potable water, waste water, chiller water, cooling tower systems, and natural gas, fuel, etc.;
- Works with heavy machinery;
- Maneuvers large loads and lift up to 40 lbs, unassisted;
- Communicates by beeper, radio, telephone and cell phone;
- Detects equipment malfunctions by sound, sight, smell and other diagnostic means;
- Completes required forms and logs and submits reports; maintains time, maintenance and material records;
- Acts as a lead for non-certified maintenance engineers and maintenance workers.
Typical Qualifications
These are entrance requirements to the examination process and assure neither continuance in the process nor placement on an eligible list.
COUNTY AGENCY/DEPARTMENTAL SERVICE: Currently working as a regular employee in the General Services Agency with the County of Ventura. NOTE: Regular employee means one who has been appointed from an eligible list to an allocated position in County Service.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE: In order to qualify for the classification of Certified Building Maintenance Engineer, a candidate must be certified by IUOE – Local 501 as having met or exceeded the certification deemed necessary by BOMA of Greater Los Angeles.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Must possess (at initial appointment) and thereafter maintain in current status, a California Driver License and all certifications deemed necessary by BOMA of greater Los Angeles.
