King County Metro Transit’s Rail Division has an exciting opportunity for a
Rail Facilities Custodian Lead.
The Rail Facilities Custodian Lead will maintain the cleanliness of the interior and exterior of Light Rail Operating Facilities while taking on additional lead duties that support the Rail Facilities Custodians in their daily work. Duties include identifying, scheduling, coordinating, planning, assigning, overseeing and evaluating the work of other custodial crew members. You will also train personnel and perform related administrative duties using computers and other office equipment.
About Metro Transit's Expanding Rail Division
King County Metro Transit's Rail Division manages and maintains Sound Transit's Link light rail service and City of Seattle’s streetcar system. Link light rail currently spans a 33-mile route from SeaTac to Lynnwood and a 6.6-mile route from Redmond to South Bellevue. By the end of 2026, light rail is projected to expand to nearly 60 route miles, adding seven new stations. Additional expansions to the Link system will be coming online for years to come.
Seattle Streetcar includes the 1.3 mile South Lake Union line and the 2.5 mile First Hill line, proudly serving the diverse and vibrant communities around Seattle’s downtown core. These rail services complement Metro's extensive fixed-route bus system and mobility services. Puget Sound transit agencies are collaborating to create an integrated transit network that enables people to travel farther, faster, and more easily.
This recruitment may immediately fill one (1) Career Service position and may also be used to establish an eligibility list for future Career Service vacancies in this classification, valid up to 12 months or until exhausted and at the discretion of the hiring authority.
Interviews are anticipated to occur during the week of
June 23 through June 27, 2025, but are subject to change.

Note: Per the union contract shift differential is paid to those working second and third shifts. Shift pay is 5% for second shift and 7.5% for third shift, on top of hourly pay. The normal workweek is five 8-hour shifts per week, with two consecutive days off, but not necessarily weekends off. This is an essential position and is required to report to work during adverse weather and/or other urgent/emergency needs.

As The Rail Facilities Custodian Lead, You Will
- Prioritize, schedule and assign work for custodial crew.
- Oversee and evaluate the work of facilities custodians and monitor work in progress.
- Secure areas for safe cleaning.
- Clean, sanitize and stock lunchrooms, restrooms, including tables, toilets, showers, sinks, and walls.
- Load and unload small equipment, debris and trash.
- Mix and use cleaning chemicals and solutions.
- Empty trash and recycle bins.
- Operate pressure washers, floor scrubbers and associated equipment.
- Clean, stock and sanitize restrooms and elevators.
- Dust, wipe, wash and vacuum surfaces.
- Request and stock various supplies.
- Clean glass and surface areas; remove graffiti.
- Set up and arrange furniture for meetings and other events.
- Plan, schedule and coordinate activities and work with other trades; assist other trades as necessary.
- Operate company assigned vehicles.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills
- Two years of recent professional industrial cleaning/janitorial experience and one year of recent professional Lead experience.
- Knowledge of basic janitorial techniques.
- Knowledge in the use and care of cleaning equipment.
- Knowledge of basic safety rules and applicable OSHA laws.
- Knowledge in the proper use, mixing and disposal of cleaning chemicals and solutions.
- Skill in reading, following and safely handling cleaning supplies per manufacturer’s instructions.
- Intermediate verbal and written communication skills including the ability to understand and deliver instructions in English.
- Basic computer skills; ability to use Microsoft Office products, the internet and other required office equipment, tools and resources.
- Skill in dealing proactively and sensitively with customers.
- Skill in performing multiple tasks simultaneously.

Necessary Special Requirements
- Valid Washington State Driver License (or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire), with an acceptable driving history.
- First-Aid/CPR certifications must be acquired within 90 days of hire date (training will be provided by employer).
- Non-standard work hours including evenings, weekends and holidays may be required.
Physical Requirements
- Constantly lift, carry and move objects of less than 25 pounds.
- Lift and move up to 50 pounds unassisted.
- Walk continuously throughout the workday.

Application & Selection Process

The most competitive candidates will be invited to participate in a 30-minute computers skills test and a panel interview upon passing the skills test. Formal offers will be finalized after candidates have successfully completed any necessary pre-employment processes, such as reference checks or internal record reviews.
Work Schedule & Location
The work location will be at Operations and Maintenance Facility Central (3407 Airport Way S, Seattle). This position is anticipated to be full time, assigned 40 hours per week, day shift.
Employees must be able to work any of the three shifts (day, swing, or graveyard). Work schedule may include non- standard work hours including evenings, weekends and holidays as needed. This position is non- exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is therefore overtime eligible, with prior supervisory approval.
