The City of Renton's Public Works Maintenance Services department is recruiting to fill a Vehicle & Equipment Mechanic vacancy. The Vehicle & Equipment Mechanic utilizes their skills to work on a variety of motor vehicles and Public Works maintenance equipment. The Vehicle & Equipment Mechanic performs preventative maintenance, inspections, and other services on all inventoried equipment including passenger vehicles, dump trucks, heavy equipment, and a variety of other City of Renton maintenance equipment.

Essential Functions
- Diagnose, repair, and maintain heavy vehicles, trucks, and other large and small diesel, battery, and gasoline-powered equipment, as follows:
- Service and repair steering, hydraulic, electrical, heating and cooling systems.
- Repair drive trains and axles, including multi-axles and controls.
- Perform major overhauls of single-engine and multi-engine systems, including propane and diesel engines.
- Repair and adjust transmissions, high-pressure pumps and compressors, valves, differentials, clutches, rear ends, and power take-offs.
- Service, repair, replace, and adjust engines, carburetors, fuel injection systems, and valves.
- Replace, fit and adjust pistons, rings and bearings.
- Clean, repair and replace fuel pumps, fuel lines, gauges and electrical wiring systems.
- Repair and replace alternators, voltage regulators, batteries, and electrical wiring.
- Adjust and reline brakes and maintain, rebuild and replace air and hydraulic brake system components.
- Perform front end alignment and repair, and change and balance tires.
- Diagnose a variety of vehicle computers and computerized sensors, and replace faulty components and parts as needed.
- Perform electrical and acetylene welding, brazing, soldering and regular routine service on City-owned tractors, machinery and equipment, and fabricate special equipment, tools, parts, and structures as needed.
- Test drive and evaluate new equipment for operation, repair and maintenance.
- Determine salvage of vehicles and equipment.
- Operate a variety of equipment and machinery including pressure and system testers, ARC and oxy-acetylene welders, computerized diagnostic equipment, scopes, digital meters, gauges, lathe, grinders, tire changing and balancing machines, hoists and jacks, emission control test equipment and a variety of power and hand tools.
- Respond to emergency requests, and drive to City sites to perform repairs to City vehicles as needed.
- Lubricate parts and change oil and filters on City-owned equipment.
- Inspect and repair tire punctures and damage as appropriate.
- Recharge and install new batteries, and replace headlights, taillights, and turn signals.
- Enter into the maintenance tracking system safety, preventive maintenance, and general work performed on each vehicle and City equipment.
- Assist with developing and implementing a preventive maintenance program, to include how worked performed, parts used, time requirements, safety records, etc. will be maintained.
- Determine necessary parts for the shop function, order parts through requisition for vehicles and equipment, and maintain vendor lists.
- Perform safety checks and inspections on City trucks, passenger vehicles and other mechanical equipment.
- Ensure vehicles meet State and local standards for public transportation and safety compliance.
- Maintain shop area, equipment, and tools in a safe, clean, and orderly condition. Determine the need for outside assistance in major repairs involving City-owned vehicles and equipment, and coordinate outside repairs, seeking approval as necessary.

Education, Experience, And License Requirements
- Two years vocational automotive technical training.
- Two years' experience in the maintenance, repair and overhaul of heavy and light gasoline, diesel and battery-powered equipment and electrical systems.
- Or 4 years of relevant education and experience.
- Valid Driver's license. Successful passing of a required driving record check.
- Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License. Positions that require a CDL Class A are safety sensitive positions. Employment is contingent upon successful drug and alcohol screening and subject to random testing.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- May drive to offsite locations to perform essential functions.

- Work is performed in a mechanical shop environment and occasionally outdoors in all weather conditions.

Recruitment Process
The screening process will include a review of minimum qualifications and applicants selected for an interview will be invited via email to self-schedule a time through the Government Jobs account. At minimum, this position will be subject to a standard criminal background check and professional reference check. This position requires driving and is also subject to a driving record check from the WA State Dept of Licensing (or other state equivalent). Driving records will be evaluated based on a points system depending on the infraction and severity. This position is considered safety-sensitive as defined by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and a pre-employment drug and alcohol test is required. A search of previous drug and alcohol testing records will also be conducted through FMCSA. Positions that require maintaining a CDL are also subject to random drug and alcohol testing.

Medical/Dental/Vision Insurance
- Employees are offered a choice of medical/vision coverage through either Kaiser Permanente or the City's self-insured plan. Preferred Provider Option is available through the self-insured plan. - The dental insurance plan covers services such as regular checkups, x-rays, fillings and crowns. Orthodontia coverage is also provided.
Deferred Compensation Program
- The City contributes 3% of the employee's base wage rate into a deferred compensation retirement plan.
- Employees may also set aside a percentage of their earnings on a tax-deferred basis.
Retirement Plan
- Employees are enrolled in either the State of Washington Department of Retirement Systems Plan (PERS) or the Public Safety Employees' Retirement System (PSERS).
- The following position is required to be enrolled in PSERS*
- Probation Officer
- If an employee was in PERS prior to 2006, the employee had the choice to remain in the PERS plan.
- Both the employee and employer contribute to the plan.
VEBA
The City contributes 1% of base pay into individual employee VEBA accounts, which can be used to pay out of pocket medical expenses.
Life Insurance
- A group term life insurance policy is provided to each employee at a value equivalent to the annual salary, up to $50,000.
- Each eligible dependent is also provided with a $1,000 policy. There is no cost to the employee.
- Optional supplemental insurance is available for employees and their dependents at group rates.
Long Term Disability Protection
- Many employees are provided with a long term disability policy up to the equivalent of 60% of their salary.
Flexible Benefits
- The City offers employees the opportunity to open two separate tax-free accounts through salary reduction. One account is to pay for expenses not covered by health insurance and the other account is for child care costs.
Vacation
- Employees accrue vacation beginning with the first day of employment as follows: 12 days per year (0-5 years); 18 days per year (6-10 years); 21 days per year (11-15 years); 24 days per year (16-20 years); and 27 days per year (21+ years).
- Employees may access their vacation after six months of employment.
Sick Leave
- Upon employment, the employee receives a sick leave bank of 24 hours, with an additional 24 hours awarded after three months.
- Thereafter, sick leave accrues at the rate of four hours each pay period.
Employee Assistance Program
- A confidential counseling assessment and referral service is available without cost to employees and family members for help with personal, family or job-related problems.
Paydays
- The City of Renton pays employees on the tenth and the twenty-fifth of each month (24 pay periods each year).
Holidays
- The City recognizes eleven holidays and offers two "personal" holidays each calendar year for most employees, unless otherwise specified in a labor contract.
