Position Description

This position assists the Operating Maintenance Engineers with repairs of systems, equipment, and fixtures.
WORK LOCATION:
This position currently works on-site only.
Shift
2nd shift (2:30pm - 11:00pm)
Salary
Anticipated starting salary range:
$32.837/hour, depending on qualifications.
The City of Minneapolis does not sponsor applicants for work visas.
Differentials
Monday through Friday Shift Differential - An additional $1.93
/hour shall be paid, for all hours worked to employee whose regularly scheduled shift begins between the hours of 11:00am and 6:00am.
Saturday and Sunday Shift Differential - Provided that a weekend shift differential shall be paid, to all employees whose regularly scheduled shifts begin within these hours; 1st Shift (6:00am and 1:59pm) $1.63 per hour, 2nd Shift (2:00pm and 8:59pm) $2.17 and 3rd Shift (9:00pm and 5:59am) $2.47.
Job Duties And Responsibilities
- Assist in various physical plant and equipment repair and maintenance projects.
- Perform preventative maintenance on equipment as assigned.
- Complete event program assignments as assigned.
- Proactively troubleshoot, maintain, and repair simple lighting and plumbing issues, including replacing bulbs, clearing drains, and replacing/repairing fixtures.
- Proactively seek areas/equipment needing repair.
- Assist with basic carpentry, including repairing doors, locks, etc.
- Repair issues that arise during events with a high sense of urgency.
- Ability to troubleshoot problems with building equipment and perform maintenance and upkeep.
- Ability to deal with emergency repairs with urgency as needed.
- Ability to read diagrams to help locate problems.
- Change belts and lubricate systems and controls.
- Maintain records as assigned.
- Perform light janitorial duties as assigned.
Working Conditions
Requires repetitive lifting or other physical tasks including walking up and down ladders, climbing scaffolds, working in confined spaces. Requires working with lime, dirt, small print, heat stress, exposure to hazardous conditions, such as loud noises, chemicals or gas fumes or other equivalent dangers.
Required Qualifications
MINIMUM EDUCATION:
High School diploma or equivalent.
Minimum Experience
One year of related experience.
Equivalency
An equivalent combination of education and highly related experience in a similar environment may be considered.
Licenses/Certifications
Valid MN Driver's License. Special Engineers License within 6 months of hire.
Selection Process
The selection process will consist of the following step:
a rating of relevant education and experience (100%). It is important that your application show all the relevant education and experience you possess. This information will be used to determine which candidates will proceed in the selection process. A submitted application is also used to verify the answers to any supplemental questions. Only those candidates who attain a passing score
(70%) on each step in the selection process will be placed on the eligible list. The City of Minneapolis Human Resources Department reserves the right to limit the number in any phase of the selection process.
Backround Check
The City has determined that a criminal background check and/or qualifications check may be necessary for certain positions with this job title. Applicants may be required to sign an informed consent form allowing the City to obtain their criminal history and/or verify their qualifications in connection with the position sought. Drug And Alcohol Testing
All job applicants must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test once a conditional offer of employment has been made. Applicants will be required to sign a notification and consent form prior to undergoing drug and alcohol testing. Applicants who do not consent to undergo drug and alcohol testing will not be required to do so and the City will withdraw the conditional job offer, resulting in the job applicant no longer being considered for the position.

Eligible List Statement
The names of applicants who meet minimum qualification and who pass the screening process shall be placed on the eligible list for employment consideration. This list will be certified to the hiring manager who may use the list to fill a vacancy of the same job title. This eligible list will expire 3 (three) months after it has been established.
Interview Selection
The hiring authority reserves the right to determine the maximum number of candidates to interview from the established eligible list. If the hiring authority decides to interview other than by exam score order, they may select additional people to interview based on a candidate’s education or experience related to the field, work history, or skills uniquely related to the operational needs of the position.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
- Vocational training in mechanical system repair and maintenance is preferred.
- Basic knowledge of heating and air conditioning systems.
- Basic knowledge of preventive maintenance and work order systems.
- Knowledge of the tools, methods, and equipment used in a large facility's mechanical operation and maintenance.
- Ability to troubleshoot problems with building equipment and perform maintenance and upkeep.
- Ability to organize and prioritize work orders.
- Ability to urgently respond to event needs.
- Ability to accurately collect data, maintain records, and report information.
- Ability to write legibly and speak clearly.
- Good customer service skills.
