About The Position

Seattle Rep is seeking a Costume Design Associate to work with, and as an extension of, the Costume Designer; assisting to fully realize the garments, accessories and hair goods that comprise a specific costume design.

Typical Duties Include

Act as Costume Design Associate

  • Understand and embrace show designs to provide continuity of design decisions throughout the build in the absence of the designer
  • Compile sketches for the workroom and Stage Managers, and perform design research, as needed
  • Facilitate procurement of all materials needed to execute costumes, including but not limited to: fabric and accessory materials, costume rentals, stock and purchased garments. This may involve local, catalog, or on-line shopping, as well as connecting with out of town colleagues and distributors
  • Attend meetings, run-throughs, dress-tech/preview with, or as a representative of, the Designer and shop
  • Assist the Costume Associate Director or Stock Manager to pull rehearsal costumes and accessories when necessary.
  • Provide timely and comprehensive communication between the Designer, work room staff, Director, actors, stage management, and other departments.
  • Compile paperwork and prepare dressing lists, check in sheets, and run lists for the wardrobe crew to facilitate the running and maintenance of each show.
  • Support the Costume Director and Costume Associate Director to manage up to date show budgets, by turning in all coded purchase receipts, and product returns in a timely manner.
  • Record and maintain a full record of all design decisions, vendors, shopping and material sources, and rental records to create a Show Binder.
  • Schedule and facilitate all outside repair and maintenance services regarding costumes garments.
  • Communicate maintenance information from Drapers and Crafts to the Wardrobe Crew.

Assist in care, maintenance and organization of costume workroom, stockroom, pre-production storage, and coordinate with costume build team

  • Assure cohesion in the workroom by communication with team members individually and as a group
  • Support the Draper Teams’ work with the goal of staying on time and budget, while fulfilling the designer’s vision
  • Assist with scheduling and prioritizing the workflow to meet internal goals which may include, but are not limited to dye schedules, fittings, tech and dress rehearsals.
  • Facilitate and time manage fittings to ensure efficiency
  • Schedule and facilitate all outside repair and maintenance services regarding costumes garments
  • Communicates maintenance information from Drapers and Crafts to the Wardrobe Crew.
  • In collaboration with Stage Management, schedule fittings.
  • Coordinate and cooperate with other departments to fulfill unity of design between scenery, properties, lighting, sound, and costumes.
  • Facilitate Wardrobe/Wigs & Hair/Stage Manager meetings.

Build and Maintain a Personal Investment in Seattle Rep and our EDI work

  • Proactive engagement and implementation of EDI (Equity, Diversity & Inclusion) practices.
  • Attend to other assignments as identified by the Costume Director, including but not limited to activities in the theatre itself.
  • Attend meetings pertinent to production, costumes, all SRT staff, and EDI work.
  • Promote a respectful work environment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Commitment to cultivating an equitable, diverse, and inclusive workplace via decisive action including consistently seeking out opportunities for self and community improvement in the areas of racial equity, accessibility, gender inclusivity, and cultural sensitivity.
  • A minimum of 4 years of demonstrated Costume Design/Design Assistant experience at the educational or professional level
  • Must possess a strong sense of design, color, and have knowledge of costume and art history
  • Ability to visualize garments from drawings while possessing a basic understanding of draping
  • Possess an excellent sense of organization and tracking
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Honed analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Work independently and as a team and be self-motivated in either situation
  • Must be able to keep a flexible work schedule, including evenings and weekends
  • Proficient computer skills (MS Outlook, Word and Excel, Photoshop).

Desired Qualifications

  • BFA in Costume Design
  • Basic accounting skills
  • Ability to lift up to 35 lbs.
  • Valid drivers’ license and good driving record
  • Knowledge of Actors Equity rules and IATSE 887
