Job Summary

The City of Bellevue Transportation Department Traffic Signal and Lighting group is seeking an Electronic Technician that is self-motivated and team oriented. Persons in this classification are responsible for the repair and maintenance of traffic and pedestrian signals, surveillance cameras, fiber optic/ethernet communication equipment and other Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) equipment.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and repair malfunctioning traffic signal and ITS equipment.
  • Configure and deploy new traffic signal and various other ITS equipment.
  • Required to respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis when on scheduled standby rotation once qualified.
  • All City personnel have a duty to report to work when emergencies and weather events impact the health, safety, and/or mobility of City residents.

Qualifications

DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES & SKILLS

  • Experience troubleshooting and maintaining Traffic Signal, ITS and Street lighting systems.
  • Knowledge of electrical and electronic circuitry.
  • Working knowledge of traffic signal and ITS construction methods and techniques.
  • Knowledge or experience with the following systems: programmable school zone flashers, video surveillance and detection, radar feedback/speed signs, RRFB crosswalks, audible pedestrian, and bicycle detection.
  • Familiarity with fiber Optic systems.
  • Ability to work from boom trucks at a height of up to 60 feet
  • Ability to deal effectively with internal and external customers in a courteous and effective manner.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain, record and or create documents of repair to equipment.
  • Ability to use city issued devices, personal computer, tablet, smart phone Microsoft products.

Education, Experince, And Other Requirements

  • Possession of a current, valid Washington State driver's license and a good safety and driving record.
  • Possession of an IMSA Level II Certification as a Signal or Bench Technician, or the ability to obtain within 1 year of hire.
  • Possession of a Washington State Traffic Control Flaggers Card, or the ability to obtain within 1 year of hire.
  • Must have or be able to obtain a Washington State Class B Commercial Driver's License and valid medical card, within 12 months of employment (city will pay for class).
  • Selected candidates must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test (consistent with Federal Laws requiring drug and alcohol testing of all job classifications requiring a CDL).
  • In-house applicants who do not currently possess a CDL will be subject to the pre-employment drug and alcohol test in accordance with DOT rules and regulations.

  • The employee may be required to push, pull, lift, and /or carry objects up to 50 pounds.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately quiet while in the office or moderately loud when in the field.
  • Work may routinely require the employee to reach, climb, balance, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or crawl.
  • The work environment in the field may be in the public right of way and open to traffic. Work may require the employee to work in bucket trucks at heights of 60 feet and work on street light systems of up to 240 volts.
  • The employee may be required to work in outside weather conditions, in wet and/or humid conditions, in high precarious places, near moving mechanical parts and traffic, near fumes, airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic hazardous chemical, or near risk of electrical shock and/or vibration. Employee must understand and use appropriate PPE as needed.
  • This position is required to become standby qualified and respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis and work alternate shifts as needed for seasonal or traffic needs.

This is a full time, union IBEW-77 position and is located at the Bellevue Service Center.
