Job Title
Vehicle and Equipment Crew Leader

$23.96 - $25.04 (6 month rate)
Basic Function
Functions as a working crew leader over Vehicle and Equipment Mechanics and assists with the repair, maintenance and inspection of a variety of vehicles and equipment with gasoline and/or diesel engines (e.g., passenger cars, vans, trucks, tractors, lawnmowers, loaders, etc.). Reports to designated supervisor.

Duties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following:
Functions as a working crew leader over Vehicle and Equipment Mechanics and other classified, temporary, or student employees engaged in automotive maintenance and related activities.
- Plans and directs the work activities of employees; assigns and monitors work duties and responsibilities; establishes and modifies work methods, schedules and priorities.
- Communicates and enforces policies and procedures; resolves problems; addresses employee concerns and complaints.
- Trains and instructs employees on proper work procedures and policies.
- May participate in the interviewing and selection of job applicants (voluntary basis); may recommend personnel actions (e.g., hiring, termination promotion, discipline, layoff/recall).
Inspects and tests equipment to diagnose malfunctions and determines repair needs.
Repairs, replaces, or adjusts defective units and parts on vehicles and equipment (e.g., exhaust systems, hydraulic systems, brake linings, gasoline and diesel engines, water and fuel pumps, wheels, tires, conventional transmissions, clutches, electrical systems, generators and alternators, starters, etc.); may rebuild defective units and parts and/or assist with major unit overhauls such as engines.
Conducts periodic inspections and maintenance of vehicles and equipment in accordance with preventative maintenance schedule; performs repairs as needed.
Maintains detailed written records of repairs and maintenance tasks performed on vehicles and equipment, personnel and time to completion.
Maintains inventory of repair parts and supplies; requisitions parts and supplies.
May perform small engine repair on two cycle and four cycle air and water cooled engines. Services and repairs inoperative vehicles and equipment in the field.
Modifies vehicles and equipment for specific tasks or as required by state or federal law. Coordinates warranty service, billing and training; obtains quotes from contractors.
Keeps work place, equipment and tools clean and safe; arranges for replacement or repair of defective tools and equipment. Performs related duties as required.
Performs related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Additional Examples of Duties – if applicable:
High school diploma or equivalent plus completion of 12 to 18 months formal training in diesel and gasoline engine repair (or equivalent training or experience which provides comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities). A minimum of three years’ experience in a variety of vehicle and equipment repair, to include gasoline, gaseous, and diesel engines, including hydraulic, ac\dc electrical, and mechanical systems. Employee must provide all basic tools needed for this position.
License/Certification
Must possess valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with proper endorsements and safe driving record, or obtain as soon as possible with extension up to 6 months from date of hire, if position requires operation of vehicles regulated by Section 4506.01 of Ohio Revised Code. Must possess current Type II and MVAC (Motor Vehicle Air Conditioning) certifications or acquire certifications during employee probationary period. Individuals will be subject to controlled substance/alcohol testing in positions where such is required by federal regulations.

Engine repair (e.g., two and four cycle single or multiple cylinder engines, gasoline, gaseous, and diesel fuel systems, hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical systems)
The use of mechanic's tools, including hand and power tools
Written communication (e.g., to complete forms, to compose memos)
Ability To
Train and provide effective work direction to other employees
Plan and direct work activities, to manage time effectively and set priorities
Resolve problems independently and make decisions
Diagnose problems and determine appropriate action
Operate computerized diagnostic equipment *
Perform basic mathematics (e.g., add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers, fractions, and decimals, and to calculate percentages)
Read (e.g., technical manuals, service bulletins, manufacturer's warranties) and interpret and apply schematic diagrams
Demonstrate physical dexterity and lift 100 pounds *
Maintain accurate records
Preferred Qualifications – If Applicable
Prior supervisory experience may be preferred.
Certification by Automotive Service Excellence preferred.

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements
Garage environment; exposed to dirt, grease, chemicals, fumes, loud noise, slippery surfaces, potentially dangerous equipment (e.g., rack lift), variable temperatures and weather conditions; requires considerable physical exertion to include frequent lifting of items up to 50 pounds (e.g., blocks, headsets) and occasional lifting of 100 pounds (e.g., tires), extended periods of standing, bending, or assuming awkward positions; may work varied hours and shifts to include evenings, weekends, and holidays; may be called to work in emergency situations; requires on-and-off-campus travel.
Working Schedule
Monday through Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.; however, schedule may vary to meet departmental needs.
