Under general supervision of the Head Custodian, assists the Head Custodian in training and supervising custodians, including performing custodial work related to the cleaning of rooms, offices and buildings.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assists the Head Custodian in scheduling and assigning work in the training of new custodians, and is responsible for arranging substitute custodial services, as needed.
  • Assists in the preparation of various reports; is responsible for keeping a constant check on the quality and effectiveness of the custodial services performed on the shift.
  • Answers calls from management, faculty and staff in regard to needs for emergency custodial services; assists in setting up rooms for special meetings; inventories custodial supplies and gives Head Custodian list of shortages.
  • Cleans, sweeps, scrubs, strips, mops and waxes floors
  • Vacuums, shampoos and extracts dirt from rugs and carpets
  • Cleans rest rooms, offices, shops, classrooms, kitchens, labs, theater, locker rooms and gym areas
  • Washes walls and removes graffiti
  • Cleans windows and drinking fountains
  • Empties and cleans waste containers, garbage and trash cans, and recycling containers
  • Cleans chalk boards, white boards and erasers
  • Replaces lights and cleans diffusers
  • Secures buildings
  • Reports needed repairs, hazardous materials or safety violations to supervisors
  • Assists in moving supplies and arranging furniture and equipment
  • Sets up facilities for special events
  • May assist in ordering, receiving, storing and inventorying of working supplies from college stores
  • May make minor non-technical repairs
  • Must be able to communicate in English (speaking, reading and writing) at a level to safely and effectively perform the essential functions of the Custodian position
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Equivalent to two (2) years of custodial or janitorial experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience that could likely provide the desired knowledge and abilities.
  • Applicant must have demonstrated cultural competency, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college staff, faculty, and students

Desirable Qualifications

Knowledge of

  • Methods of cleaning and preserving floors, walls, furniture, and fixtures
  • Cleaning materials, disinfectants, hazardous materials, and equipment used in custodial work
  • Common tools and their uses
  • Sanitation and safety measures used in a custodial operation
  • Cleaning and care of equipment and work areas
  • Safety rules and regulations applicable to school buildings
  • Principles of effective supervision and training

Ability to

  • Use cleaning materials and equipment safely and with skill and efficiency
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions
  • Move supplies and furniture and set up rooms and buildings for special occasions
  • Use common electrical cleaning equipment
  • Arrange work schedules and planning the overall, custodial function at a college or District Office
  • Read, write and carry out oral and written instructions
  • Layout special work assignments and see that they are carried out
  • Develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted while performing work

Environmental Demands

Work performed indoors and outdoors often in uncontrolled areas. Noise and vibrations are experienced in the operation of cleaning and maintenance equipment. Frequent exposure to bleach and other chemical and cleaning agents.

Frequent use of ladders that meet safety regulations, brooms, squeegees, brushes, mops, vacuum cleaners, high and low speed floor machines, yard blowers, pressure washers and yard vacuums; operates gas tractor or electrical vehicles.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Required For All Employees

Employees must satisfy all pre-employment requirements to work for the District which include, but are not limited to, the following items:

Tuberculosis Examination: Prior to employment, the successful candidate will be required to submit evidence (either skin test or X-ray report) of being free of tuberculosis within the past sixty (60) days. The TB test is a condition of employment and any expense must be borne by the successful candidate.

Fingerprinting Requirement

As a condition of employment, all employees working for community colleges in the State of California are required to be fingerprinted within the first ten (10) working days of the date of employment pursuant to Education Code Section 88024. The District Office of Human Resources processes fingerprints electronically. During the employment intake process, new employees will be given information to have their fingerprints taken at another location.

Immigration Requirement: According to the Immigration Reform and Control Act, the Peralta Community College District is required to verify that all new employees are:

  • A citizen or national of the United States;
  • An alien lawfully admitted for permanent residence in the United States; or
  • An alien authorized by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service to work in the United States.

All new employees are required to complete and sign a verification form and provide documentation attesting that he/she is a United States citizen, national, or an alien lawfully authorized to work in the United States.

District Policy: A Social Security Card will be required following selection and prior to completion of the hiring process. The employment process cannot be completed without a copy of the Social Security Card on file in the Office of Human Resources.
