Compensation: Non-exempt, $21.00/HR-$33.93/HR

Job Summary

Responsible for the coordination and documentation of patient information for Mason Health. Insurance coordinator contacts insurance companies to determine coverage provisions and limitations. Reviews completeness and accuracy of insurance information entered by registration staff during registration process. Responsible for collecting demographic data and insurance information for scheduled patients, verifying insurance eligibility, obtaining prior authorization, identifying copay information, and referring patients for financial assistance with Business office IPA as needed. Provides a “Patients First” experience and supports a positive workplace by maintaining a professional work environment while completing all assigned tasks in a timely and accurate manner. Also, may provide relief coverage in hospital registration areas.

Job Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Verifies patient’s insurance and benefit information.
  • Obtains prior authorizations from insurance companies in accordance with payer requirements.
  • Contacts patients to gather demographic and insurance in formation as needed, and updates patient information within the EMR as necessary.
  • Works with other departments to gather the clinical information required by the payer to authorize services.
  • Maintains accurate records of authorizations within the EMR.
  • Works with Business office staff to support appeal efforts for authorization-related denials.
  • Calculates estimated copay amounts based on benefits and contract reimbursement.
  • Serves as a point of contact for both internal and external customers as it relates to patient registration, displays professionalism, and promotes an atmosphere of mutual respect and cooperation.
  • Serve as a mentor to new or existing employees and shadow job functions as it relates to pre-registration work.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Education And Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Two (2) years of customer service and clerical experience.
  • Experience in hospital Admissions or insurance billing preferred.
  • Experience with medical terminology and hospital ADT system preferred.

Required Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Knowledge of insurance plan’s requirements and procedures.
  • Knowledge of managed care and government plans.
  • Ability to work well within a team as well as independently in a fast paced environment.
  • Ability to type accurately > 40 WPM.
  • Ability to be flexible and make changes in workflow/process to meet the needs of the department.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously to meet department goals and mission.
  • Ability to think critically and is able to take necessary steps to obtain resolution for problems that arise.
