General Purpose
This position is responsible for providing on-site leadership, direction and technical expertise to crewmembers engaged in the maintenance of all city parks and public properties. In addition, this position may be responsible for maintenance and repair to other city facilities as directed.

Essential Job Functions
- Completes required paperwork, including but not limited to; production reports, crew schedules, first report of accident, log of activities, etc.
- Directs and assists crewmembers in maintenance and repair work on City and Parks facilities through coordinating crew activities, reviewing work and providing technical oversight.
- Prepares, coordinates and leads assigned work group in daily work assignments and projects.
- Assists grounds and cemetery manager with supervision, evaluation and training of crewmembers.
- Carries out aspects of mowing including but not limited to groomed mowing, specialized and roadside mowing, trimming, and conservation area mowing.
- Supervises, and inspects work performed by outside contractors on park properties or City grounds.
- Ensures proper functioning of irrigation systems.
- Performs maintenance and installation of park amenities including but not limited to playgrounds, benches, trash receptacles, bike racks, fencing, monuments, flagpoles, etc..
- Prepares. performs, and maintains proper athletic fields, field equipment and markings.
- Performs graffiti removal.
- Carries out all aspects of beach maintenance.
- Carries out all turf maintenance duties, such as seeding, fertilizing, aerating, and top dressing for all city parks, public facilities and athletic fields.
- Performs maintenance for all park roadways and parking lots.
- Performs trash removal from Public parks and facilities.
- Prepare and maintain outdoor ice rinks in the winter.
- Performs tasks associated with special events occurring throughout the City.
- Performs welding and metal fabrication work to include but not limited to playground repair, mowing deck and other implement repair, cutting with oxy-acetylene torches, welding by MIG or with ARC.
- Performs playground work including but not limited to monthly inspections, installation, repair, removal, etc. Inspections performed in accordance with National Playground Safety Inspection standards.
- Completes written forms to document time and materials used for projects, equipment and equipment maintenance. Maintains records of inventory, parts for equipment, types of materials used, etc.
- Operates equipment including but not limited to specialized implements, trucks, and tractors. Performs daily, weekly and monthly service checks and basic maintenance tasks on all equipment used including tractors, implements and vehicles. Works with Equipment Maintenance Division to ensure this equipment is serviced and maintained in an appropriate and timely manner.
- Ensures established Department and Federal safety procedures are followed.
- Requisitions required materials to complete projects in a manner consistent with Department policies and procedures.
- Maintains control over progress and quality of work in accordance with departmental goals, objectives and standards.
- Participates in the hiring process including but not limited to screening, rating, interviewing and recommending applicants.
- Acts as “Ambassador” for Parks, carrying out work in a manner consistent with Department Mission and Vision.
- Performs duties and functions of subordinate positions.
- Performs snow plowing, shoveling and salting as required.
- Acts as Grounds Manager in their absence.
Non-Essential Functions:
- Other duties as assigned, including operation of various types of equipment, including but not limited to special duties for other divisions of the department, and other City departments, on a seasonal or project basis.
Qualifications/Basic Job Requirements

- High School Diploma equivalent.
- Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license.
- Background in turf management with experience in seedbed preparation preferred.
- Background in landscape construction with knowledge of irrigation systems preferred.
- One year of experience using commercial riding, lawn-mowing equipment required.
- Two years of experience in general construction with a background in either carpentry, electrical and/or plumbing required.
- Ability to act independently with little or no supervision.
- Ability to maintain professional appearance while engaging in field work, by refraining from any use of profanity, inappropriate language, or inappropriate behavior required.
- Ability to provide direction and/or work with volunteers and temporary employees.
- Experience using a pick-up or one-ton truck with salter and front snowplow preferred.
- Operate all Parks equipment in accordance with Department policies and procedures.
- Must interact with the public and coworkers in a respectful and professional manner at all times.
- Utilize personal safety equipment in accordance with all VOSHA and department policies and procedures.
- May be required to obtain and maintain Playground Safety Inspector Certification.
- Ability to operate vehicles.? No standard transmission in our fleet
- Ability to operate Agricultural Style tractors, backhoe, front-end loader, chain saws and other power tools and equipment.
- Ability to work in all weather conditions.
- Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds as directed.
- Ability to work evenings weekends and holidays.
