Position Overview
We are seeking a skilled and responsible Water Treatment Operator/Superintendent to join our team. This role involves operating and supervising the school's water treatment plant equipment and facilities. The position requires a high level of expertise and responsibility, with duties determined by experience, training, and operating requirements. The CCPS Water/Wastewater Superintendent or staff provides supervision through inspections and analysis of shift reports, chemical laboratory tests, product quality, and other performance criteria.
Education And Work Experience
- High School diploma or GED.
- Graduation from high school, including or supplemented by courses in chemistry or related subjects; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Must currently hold a Water Treatment (T-2) license from the Maryland State Board of Waterworks with a minimum of three years' operating experience in Water Treatment (T-2).
- A minimum of three years' operating experience in a Water Treatment (T-2) Maryland State Board of Waterworks and Waste Systems Operators water treatment facility is required.
Qualifications
- Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of mechanical equipment and machinery functions and servicing requirements.
- Exhibit a thorough understanding of water treatment processes.
- Inspect machinery and mechanical equipment during operation to identify flaws and defects.
- Accurately read meters and charts and maintain simple records.
- Follow oral and written instructions effectively; possess mechanical aptitude; be available for overtime and emergency overtime work.
- Meet experience requirements based on certification level acquired. Possess sufficient education to interpret and follow instructions and prepare for licensing tests.
- Maintain all training and education requirements for the position.
- Obtain a Superintendent license for both (T-2) and (W-3) systems operations.
- Serve as an essential employee.
- Consent to chemical substance screening in accordance with Federal, State, and City guidelines, including random tests for drug or alcohol use.
- Physical Requirements:
- Demonstrate strength and agility to lift and maneuver heavy objects, tools, and equipment, and operate plant equipment.
- Move around the plant physically, including stair climbing.
- Visual Requirements:
- Possess sufficient visual ability to operate plant equipment day and night, observe unsafe conditions, and read and write reports, correspondence, and instructions.
Essential Job Functions
- Direct and Supervise:
- Oversee all water plant functions and personnel, organizing and directing operations and maintenance activities.
- Ensure equipment maintenance and monitor plant performance to meet water quality standards.
- Ensure work is completed safely, timely, and efficiently in accordance with applicable procedures, rules, regulations, and Federal, State, and local laws.
- Inspection and Reporting:
- Perform regular inspections of the plant and collect data from subordinate personnel.
- Prepare daily and monthly reports regarding water quality and plant equipment conditions.
- Evaluate plant operations for efficiency and compliance and enforce safety policies.
- Regulatory Compliance:
- Submit required reports to State and Federal government agencies.
- Budget Management:
- Develop and submit the department budget, administer and monitor the budget upon approval, and assist in Capital Improvement Program (CIP) projects.
- Licensing:
- Obtain a (W-3) wastewater operator's license from the Maryland State Board of Waterworks within one year of hire.
- Collaboration:
- Work collaboratively with the local health department as needed.
- Additional Duties:
- Execute other job duties as necessary.

The environmental factors and/or physical requirements of this position include the following: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk; use hands and fingers to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and talk or hear. The employee is regularly required to reach with hands and arms and operate machinery. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee frequently must squat, stoop, or kneel, reach above the head, and reach forward. Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand, and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard. The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp tools and climbs on to ladders. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person while performing the duties of this job. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 75 pounds such as a toolbox. Occasionally the employee will lift and/or move up to 90 lbs. such as furniture or equipment. The employee will sometimes push/pull items such as tables, scaffolds, and cabinets. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, peripheral vision, and the ability to focus. The employee will regularly work indoors and outdoors. The employee will work near or with moving mechanical equipment. The employee may work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products, degreasers, sprays, cleaners, fertilizers, seed, and non-household dust. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and occasionally will work in a loud area.
