Overview
National Technologies Inc. We are seeking a skilled Fiber Optic Splicer to work as part of a team of 3 to 10 technicians under the direction of a Fiber Splicing Foreman. This role involves supporting the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of high-count fiber optic networks across diverse project types, including FTTx, on-premise, head end, data center, long-haul, maintenance, emergency, and live network work. Key Responsibilities
- Fiber Optic Splicing and Installation:
- Assist in fusion splicing high-count fiber cables (864ct, 1728ct, 3456ct) under the guidance of the Fiber Splicing Foreman, ensuring precision and adherence to industry standards.
- Support mid-sheath (ring-cut) operations on high-count fiber cables, following established protocols to minimize network disruption.
- Participate in live fiber network splicing during maintenance windows, adhering to strict procedures to prevent service interruptions.
- Operate Fujikura splice machines to achieve low-loss splices, contributing to network reliability and performance.
- Testing and Troubleshooting:
- Conduct OTDR (Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer) testing to identify faults, measure fiber loss, and verify splice quality, as directed by the foreman.
- Perform OLTS (Optical Loss Test Set) testing to validate end-to-end fiber performance, ensuring compliance with project specifications.
- Assist in troubleshooting live/active network fiber issues, supporting the foreman in diagnosing and resolving problems to minimize downtime.
- Use Exfo equipment for testing and documentation, ensuring accurate results under the foreman’s supervision.
- Utilize Fast Reporter software to generate test reports and document splicing and testing outcomes, as instructed.
- Team Collaboration:
- Work as part of a crew of 3 to 10 technicians , following the Fiber Splicing Foreman’s instructions to complete assigned tasks efficiently and safely.
- Collaborate with team members to ensure project deadlines and quality standards are met.
- Participate in on-site training provided by the foreman to enhance technical skills and adhere to NTI’s safety protocols and industry best practices.
- Communicate effectively with the foreman and team to report progress, challenges, or concerns during project execution.
- Project Scope and Work Types:
- Support fiber optic splicing and related tasks for diverse projects, including:
- FTTx (Fiber to the x) : Assisting in deploying fiber optic networks to homes, businesses, and other end points.
- On-Premise : Supporting fiber infrastructure installation and maintenance within client facilities.
- Head End : Contributing to connectivity at central network hubs.
- Data Center : Assisting in establishing high-capacity fiber connections for data center operations.
- Long-Haul : Supporting splicing and maintenance of fiber for long-distance telecommunications networks.
- Maintenance Work : Assisting in routine inspections and repairs to ensure network reliability.
- Emergency Work : Supporting urgent responses to network outages or failures to restore service.
- Live Network : Assisting in splicing and testing on active networks with minimal disruption.
- Additional Technical Tasks (Preferred Skills):
- Assist with cable pulling operations to install fiber optic cables in conduits, ducts, or aerial configurations.
- Support cabinet bolting to secure telecommunications equipment per project specifications.
- Help install basket trays to organize and protect cabling infrastructure in indoor and outdoor settings.
- Operate scissor lifts safely to access elevated work areas, adhering to OSHA and NTI safety standards.
- Safety and Compliance:
- Adhere to all safety regulations, including OSHA, NTI, and IBEW Local 640 guidelines, to maintain a safe work environment.
- Participate in regular safety meetings and training sessions to stay current on best practices and protocols.
- Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow safe work procedures as directed by the foreman.
- Maintain a clean and organized work site to prevent hazards and promote operational efficiency.
- Administrative and Reporting Duties:
- Document work activities, including splicing records and test results, using NTI’s reporting tools as directed by the foreman.
- Assist in preparing accurate and timely reports via Fast Reporter software or other designated platforms.
- Report project progress and any issues to the foreman for effective communication with project managers and clients.
- Comply with union agreements, including work hours, breaks, and reporting requirements under IBEW Local 640.
Job Requirements
- Technical Skills and Experience:
- Minimum of 1 year of experience in fiber optic splicing, with exposure to high-count fiber cables (864ct, 1728ct, 3456ct).
- Ability to perform mid-sheath (ring-cut) operations on high-count fiber cables under supervision.
- Experience supporting live fiber network splicing during maintenance windows, with an understanding of network integrity protocols.
- Familiarity with OTDR and OLTS testing to validate fiber performance and troubleshoot issues.
- Knowledge of Exfo equipment , Fast Reporter software , and Fujikura splice machines .
- Preferred experience in cable pulling , cabinet bolting , basket tray installation , and scissor lift operation .
- Physical and Environmental Requirements:
- Ability to lift and carry a minimum of 50 pounds repeatedly throughout the workday.
- Comfortable working in indoor and outdoor environments , including exposure to varying weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, etc.).
- Ability to stand for up to 12 hours per day and perform physically demanding tasks, including climbing, bending, and crouching.
- Willingness to work nighttime shifts as required to accommodate maintenance windows or project schedules.
- Professional Qualifications:
- Fluent in English (written and verbal) to communicate effectively with team members, the foreman, and management.
- Clean background check and drug screen required as a condition of employment.
- Valid driver’s license required (no commercial driver’s license needed).
- Membership in good standing with IBEW Local 640 or willingness to join the union upon hire.

Work Schedule
- Full-time position, typically 40 hours per week , with potential for overtime based on project needs.
