Position Summary: The Manager of Grid Operations oversees the operations of the integrated PG&E transmission system to ensure the grid is operated in a safe, reliable and compliant manner while minimizing costs to customers and the company. The incumbents lead teams responsible for the coordination and communication of planned or forced equipment outages, system status, unusual events, including the coordination of system restoration following major disturbances. Grid Operations Leadership develop and implement work practices that allow for efficient use of resources and close communications and coordination with other departments to meet PG&E safety, reliability, and customer satisfaction goals. The Vacaville Grid Control Center (VGCC) and Rocklin Grid Control Center monitor the day-to-day real-time operations of the PG&E transmission system and work closely with California Independent System Operator (CAISO) to maintain system reliability including monitoring voltages, coordinating switching actions, preparing for and responding to emergency system events. Leaders create an environment for safe, reliable, compliant and event-free management of the Bulk Electric System (BES) while encouraging employees to take responsibility for the safety of everyone and everything.

Reports to the Director of Transmission Grid Operations in Electric System Operations.

PG&E is providing the salary range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job. The actual salary paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity. Although we estimate the successful candidate hired into this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis related to these factors.

A reasonable salary range is:

  • Minimum Base Salary (Bay Area) $151,000.00
  • Mid Base Salary (Bay Area) $204,000.00
  • Maximum Base Salary (Bay Area) $257,000.00

Job Responsibilities:

  • Schedules planned work on the grid transmission system in a reliable manner, including the safe and efficient operations and staffing of multiple grid control centers.
  • Operates the transmission system in a reliable manner. Provides emergency response for all transmission events.
  • Provides clearance coordination for the transmission system, including coordination with the CAISO and coordination on a short-term and long-term basis for all electric transmission.
  • Contributes to department budget development and manages spending to ensure budget allocations are within target.
  • Develops and implements actions that improve and support system reliability and emergency response expectations.
  • Effectively deals with customer issues and ensures customer satisfaction.
  • Communicates regularly and partners with construction departments, distribution centers, engineering and planning support, in addition to transmission customers, CAISO and other agencies.
  • Fosters relationships and communication with industry leaders, including IBEW, WECC, NERC, CAISO, other utilities and agencies, etc.
  • Ensures that technical and mandatory training/certification is completed and properly documented and employees are competent to perform their job.
  • Supervision of 6 or more Supervisors; approximately 75 indirect staff of dispatchers, operators and clerical.
  • Manages staff to accomplish results through effective recruitment and selection, training and development, performance management, and rewards and recognition.
  • Ensure workforce maintains North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) certification required to operate the Bulk Electric System (BES).
  • Maintains a quarterly Audit ready posture to ensure Compliance with all NERC reliability standards.
  • Works closely with the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) to ensure alignment with Coordinated Functional Registration (CFR) which outlines our responsibilities to meet Reliability Standard Requirements.
  • Contributes to EP&R overall company emergency response plan to make sure that Transmission System Operations and Interconnection Reliability are maintained.

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 8 or more years of experience in electric operations (or an equivalent environment) with 5 or more years of supervisory experience in any environment.
