Overview

National Technologies Inc. (NTI) is a premier provider of cutting-edge telecommunications infrastructure solutions, delivering high-capacity fiber optic networks that enable seamless connectivity for communities, businesses, and industries. We are seeking an experienced Fiber Splicing Foreman to lead a team of 3 to 10 technicians in the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of high-count fiber optic networks across diverse project types, including FTTx, on-premise, head end, data center, long-haul, maintenance, emergency, and live network work. As a union position under the IBEW Local 640 , this role offers opportunities for career advancement within a safety-driven and innovative organization. Key Responsibilities

  • Fiber Optic Splicing and Installation:
    • Perform fusion splicing on high-count fiber cables (864ct, 1728ct, 3456ct) with precision, ensuring compliance with industry standards.
    • Execute mid-sheath (ring-cut) operations on high-count fiber cables, minimizing disruption to network performance.
    • Conduct live fiber network splicing during maintenance windows, adhering to strict protocols to prevent service interruptions.
    • Utilize Fujikura splice machines to achieve low-loss splices, optimizing network reliability and performance.
  • Testing and Troubleshooting:
    • Perform OTDR (Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer) testing to identify faults, measure fiber loss, and verify splice quality.
    • Conduct OLTS (Optical Loss Test Set) testing to validate end-to-end fiber performance and ensure project specifications are met.
    • Troubleshoot live/active network fiber issues, diagnosing and resolving problems efficiently to minimize downtime.
    • Operate Exfo equipment for accurate testing and documentation, ensuring compliance with client requirements.
    • Use Fast Reporter software to generate detailed test reports, analyze data, and document splicing and testing outcomes.
  • Team Leadership and Supervision:
    • Lead and mentor a crew of 3 to 10 fiber optic technicians , fostering a culture of safety, efficiency, and high-quality workmanship.
    • Assign daily tasks, monitor progress, and provide hands-on technical guidance to ensure project deadlines and quality standards are met.
    • Conduct on-site training and enforce adherence to NTI’s safety protocols, union guidelines, and industry best practices.
    • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and other foremen to coordinate workflows and address project challenges.
  • Project Scope and Work Types:
    • Oversee fiber optic splicing and related tasks for diverse projects, including:
      • FTTx (Fiber to the x) : Deploying fiber optic networks to homes, businesses, and other end points.
      • On-Premise : Installing and maintaining fiber infrastructure within client facilities.
      • Head End : Supporting connectivity at central network hubs.
      • Data Center : Ensuring high-capacity fiber connections for data center operations.
      • Long-Haul : Splicing and maintaining fiber for long-distance telecommunications networks.
      • Maintenance Work : Performing routine inspections and repairs to ensure network reliability.
      • Emergency Work : Responding to urgent network outages or failures to restore service.
      • Live Network : Executing splicing and testing on active networks with minimal disruption.
  • Additional Technical Tasks (Preferred Skills):
    • Assist with cable pulling operations to install fiber optic cables in conduits, ducts, or aerial configurations.
    • Perform cabinet bolting to secure telecommunications equipment per project specifications.
    • Install basket trays to organize and protect cabling infrastructure in indoor and outdoor settings.
    • Operate scissor lifts safely to access elevated work areas, adhering to OSHA and NTI safety standards.
  • Safety and Compliance:
    • Adhere to all safety regulations, including OSHA, NTI, and IBEW Local 640 guidelines, to maintain a safe work environment.
    • Participate in regular safety meetings and training sessions to stay current on best practices and protocols.
    • Ensure all team members use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow safe work procedures.
    • Maintain a clean and organized work site to prevent hazards and promote operational efficiency.
  • Administrative and Reporting Duties:
    • Document daily work activities, including splicing records, test results, and project progress, using NTI’s reporting tools.
    • Submit accurate and timely reports via Fast Reporter software or other designated platforms.
    • Communicate effectively with project managers and clients to provide updates on project status and resolve concerns.
    • Ensure compliance with union agreements, including work hours, breaks, and reporting requirements under IBEW Local 640.
Job Requirements

  • Technical Skills and Experience:
    • Minimum of 5 years of experience in fiber optic splicing, with expertise in high-count fiber cables (864ct, 1728ct, 3456ct).
    • Minimum of 1 year of supervisory experience leading a team of technicians in fiber optic or telecommunications projects.
    • Demonstrated ability to perform mid-sheath (ring-cut) operations on high-count fiber cables.
    • Experience splicing live fiber networks during maintenance windows, with a strong understanding of network integrity protocols.
    • Proficiency in OTDR and OLTS testing to validate fiber performance and troubleshoot issues.
    • Familiarity with Exfo equipment , Fast Reporter software , and Fujikura splice machines .
    • Preferred experience in cable pulling , cabinet bolting , basket tray installation , and scissor lift operation .
  • Physical and Environmental Requirements:
    • Ability to lift and carry a minimum of 50 pounds repeatedly throughout the workday.
    • Comfortable working in indoor and outdoor environments , including exposure to varying weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, etc.).
    • Ability to stand for up to 12 hours per day and perform physically demanding tasks, including climbing, bending, and crouching.
    • Willingness to work nighttime shifts as required to accommodate maintenance windows or project schedules.
  • Professional Qualifications:
    • Fluent in English (written and verbal) to communicate effectively with team members, clients, and management.
    • Clean background check and drug screen required as a condition of employment.
    • Valid driver’s license required (no commercial driver’s license needed).
    • Membership in good standing with IBEW Local 640 or willingness to join the union upon hire.
  • Soft Skills and Attributes:

Work Schedule

  • Full-time position, typically 40 hours per week , with potential for overtime based on project needs.
  • Some nighttime work required to accommodate live network maintenance windows.
