Brief Job Description (essential functions of the position):
Under direction, performs work of moderate difficulty involving supervising and assisting subordinate personnel engaged in the maintenance and repair of a variety of automotive vehicles such as pickup trucks, packers, trailers, earth moving, diesel equipment, alternative fuel vehicles and specialty equipment.
Responsibilities

- Ensures preventative maintenance programs are adhered to.
- Assists in the more complex automotive repairs.
- Maintains time and attendance records.
- Requisitions parts and supplies.
- Performs mechanical work and related work as required.
- Required to tow and deliver vehicles, equipment utilizing tow trucks, flatbed trucks, and trailers.
- Required to perform other job-related duties as necessary and perform related work as required.
- Must be available to work any shift, Monday - Friday or Tuesday - Saturday.
- Required to work any emergency as directed by the Commissioner of Public Works.
Minimum Entrance Qualifications
- Requires at least four (4) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, paid professional experience as an automotive mechanic, working on a broad range of commonly known light and heavy-duty automotive equipment.
- Must possess a valid Massachusetts CDL Class B with an air brake endorsement.
- Must be certified in any required refrigerant recycling and service procedures.
- Ability to operate electronic diagnostic equipment, hydraulic testing equipment, air testing equipment, and antifreeze testing equipment.
- Good knowledge of:
- the theories, principals, and practices of automotive diagnosis, repair, and maintenance
- the tools, materials, supplies, and equipment used in the area of automotive repair
- the detailed operation of different parts of automobiles such as suspensions, HVAC, brakes, electrical systems, etc.
- diagnostic equipment and computer scanners, air conditioning recharging systems, radio trunking systems, and other automotive diagnostic equipment
- programming and repair of other computer systems
- the safety practices utilized in the area of automotive repair
- Working skills in the diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of light and heavy automotive equipment; in the application of tools used in the trade.
- Ability to plan, assign, and supervise the work of subordinate personnel.
- Must be proficient in basic computer skills and applications.
- Must possess ASE Master Auto or Truck Certification.
- Must have the ability to exercise good judgment and be able to focus on detail as required by the job.
