Job Description

The City of Renton is looking for their next Facilities Technician 1 or 2 to join the Public Works Department. This position performs what the Manager describes as a "little bit of everything" around the city. From supporting events such as Clam Lights to maintaining the City's Water Park, recreation facilities and office space, the Facilities Technician must be proficient in a variety of building trades and want to use their skills to help keep our city running! ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Facilities Technician 1:

  • Perform semi-skilled to skilled construction, maintenance, repair and remodeling of City buildings, facilities and equipment in a variety of trades including plumbing, electrical, locksmithing, carpentry, sheetrock, glazing and concrete work; assure buildings are maintained in a safe condition and in compliance with applicable codes.
  • Install, maintain and repair plumbing fixtures and waste disposal systems including plastic, copper and galvanized piping; cut, thread and replace water pipes; install and maintain toilets, urinals, sinks, faucets, drinking fountains, decorative fountains, water heaters and new water lines.
  • Perform adjustments and emergency repairs to plumbing equipment including fixing broken pipes, cleaning plugged drains, draining pipes, replacing washers, faucets and floats, soldering spouts and gutters, cleaning grease traps and flushing or unplugging sewer lines.
  • Install, maintain and repair building structures, machinery and fixtures such as partitions, doors, cabinets, windows, electrical switches and fixtures.
  • Under the guidance of the Electrical Technician install, troubleshoot and repair electrical fixtures, switches, receptacles, fans, systems and other installations; install new wiring, plugs, lights, circuit breakers and panels; run conduit and pull wire; lubricate, adjust and repair electrical equipment.
  • Install and replace window units, glass, and ceramic tile and perform other glazier duties; repair, replace and re-grout tile; construct forms and mix, pour and finish concrete; repair or apply new plaster and masonry surfaces.
  • Refinish floors, furniture, cabinets and other wood items; install doors, wall paneling, wall partitions, ceilings and windows; construct and install cabinets and shelves; build walls and hang doors and paneling; install, inspect and repair roofing.

Facilities Technician 2:

  • Perform a variety of trades including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, locksmithing security systems, carpentry, sheetrock, and concrete work; assure buildings are maintained in a safe condition and in compliance with applicable codes.
  • Perform a variety of troubleshooting, analysis and repair of HVAC systems and equipment; assist HVAC Technicians with major system installations and repairs.
  • Install, maintain, and repair plumbing fixtures and waste disposal systems including plastic, copper and galvanized piping; cut; install and maintain toilets, urinals, sinks, faucets, drinking fountains, decorative fountains, water heaters and new water lines.
  • Adjust and perform emergency repairs to plumbing equipment and systems including fixing broken pipes, cleaning plugged drains, draining pipes, replacing washers, faucets and floats, soldering spouts and gutters, cleaning grease traps and flushing or unplugging sewer lines.
  • Install, troubleshoot and repair electrical and electronic systems, security alarm systems, electronic locks and receptacles and lighting.
  • Repair, replace, and re-grout tile; construct forms and mix, pour and finish concrete; repair or apply new plaster and masonry surfaces.
  • Perform rough and finish carpentry construction and repair; refinish floors, furniture, cabinets and other wood items; install doors, install wall paneling, wall partitions, ceilings and windows; construct and install cabinets and shelves; build walls and hang doors and paneling; install, inspect and repair roofing.
  • Frame, install, tape, finish and texture sheetrock, drywall, and other wall construction materials; remodel office areas; remove, relocate, and construct walls.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS:

Facilities Technician 1:

  • Coursework in electrical theory or building trades.
  • Minimum 3 years of increasingly responsible maintenance and construction experience in a variety of the building trades.
  • Or 4 years of relevant education and experience.
  • Valid Washington State driver's license.
  • Successful passing of a required background check and national fingerprint-based records check.

Facilities Technician 2:

  • Coursework in electrical, HVAC, plumbing systems, or other building trades.
  • Minimum 4 years of increasingly responsible maintenance and construction experience in a variety of the building trades.
  • Or minimum 5 years of relevant education and experience
  • Valid driver's license.
  • First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Successful passing of a required driving record check.
  • Successful passing of a required background check and national fingerprint-based records check.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Move throughout City facilities and buildings.
  • Driving to offsite locations to perform essential functions.
  • Operate a computer and other office equipment.
  • Communicate with City employees and residents.
  • Operate a variety of equipment, machinery and hand and power tools.
  • Lift or move items weighing up to 50 pounds regularly and 100 pounds occasionally.
  • Work in awkward and/or confined spaces.
  • Climb and work from ladders, climb stairs, good reflexes, eyesight, bending, stretching, and standing for extended periods.
  • Exposure to high voltage wires, hazardous materials, heights, and noise from equipment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Work is performed in a typical office environment and outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Noise level out in the field is moderately loud and noise level in the office is moderately quiet.
  • May be required to participate in a standby or on-call rotation.
  • Work nights, weekends, holidays, and City sponsored events as needed.

Recruitment Process:

The screening process will include a review of minimum qualifications and applicants selected for an interview will be invited via email to self-schedule a time through the Government Jobs account. This position requires driving and is also subject to a driving record check from the WA State Dept. of Licensing (or other state equivalent). Driving records will be evaluated based on a points system depending on the infraction and severity.

Medical/Dental/Vision Insurance

  • Employees are offered a choice of medical/vision coverage through either Kaiser Permanente or the City's self-insured plan. Preferred Provider Option is available through the self-insured plan.   • The dental insurance plan covers services such as regular checkups, x-rays, fillings and crowns. Orthodontia coverage is also provided.

Deferred Compensation Program

  • The City contributes 3% of the employee's base wage rate into a deferred compensation retirement plan.
  • Employees may also set aside a percentage of their earnings on a tax-deferred basis.

Retirement Plan

  • Employees are enrolled in either the State of Washington Department of Retirement Systems Plan (PERS) or the Public Safety Employees' Retirement System (PSERS).
  • The following position is required to be enrolled in PSERS*

VEBA

  • If an employee was in PERS prior to 2006, the employee had the choice to remain in the PERS plan.
  • Both the employee and employer contribute to the plan.

The City contributes 1% of base pay into individual employee VEBA accounts, which can be used to pay out of pocket medical expenses.

Life Insurance

  • A group term life insurance policy is provided to each employee at a value equivalent to the annual salary, up to $50,000.
  • Each eligible dependent is also provided with a $1,000 policy. There is no cost to the employee.
  • Optional supplemental insurance is available for employees and their dependents at group rates.

Long Term Disability Protection

  • Many employees are provided with a long term disability policy up to the equivalent of 60% of their salary.

Flexible Benefits

  • The City offers employees the opportunity to open two separate tax-free accounts through salary reduction. One account is to pay for expenses not covered by health insurance and the other account is for child care costs.

Vacation

  • Employees accrue vacation beginning with the first day of employment as follows: 12 days per year (0-5 years); 18 days per year (6-10 years); 21 days per year (11-15 years); 24 days per year (16-20 years); and 27 days per year (21+ years).
  • Employees may access their vacation after six months of employment.

Sick Leave

  • Upon employment, the employee receives a sick leave bank of 24 hours, with an additional 24 hours awarded after three months.
  • Thereafter, sick leave accrues at the rate of four hours each pay period.

Employee Assistance Program

  • A confidential counseling assessment and referral service is available without cost to employees and family members for help with personal, family or job-related problems.

Paydays

  • The City of Renton pays employees on the tenth and the twenty-fifth of each month (24 pay periods each year).

Holidays

  • The City recognizes eleven holidays and offers two "personal" holidays each calendar year for most employees, unless otherwise specified in a labor contract.

Hours of Work

  • Flexible work schedules are available in many departments.

Transportation

  • Unlimited free rides on various bus systems as well as various carpool and rideshare options are available for City employees.
