Position Summary

Responsible for supervising and working with Airport Maintenance Workers as assigned by the Field Maintenance Manager or Assistant Managers in performance of airport field maintenance functions in all areas of the airport and all phases of work involved. Responsible for the safety of personnel and equipment in the performance of all duties. Assist in inspections of airside runway, taxiway, ramp areas, landside lots, roads, walks and other public areas.

Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to, snow removal operations, asphalt and concrete surface repairs, grounds keeping, general airport cleaning, utility repairs, fencing, signage, pollution control and inventory.

Currently, this position works the afternoon shift.

Position Description

Snow and Ice Removal

  • Supervise and work with Airport Maintenance Workers in designated areas of snow and ice removal and snow hauling operations
  • Direct high-speed plows, runway brooms, batwings and blowers on runways, taxiways, and ramps, generally, but not limited to, in a lead vehicle or plow
  • Perform snow and ice removal on ramps, gate areas, parking lots and decks, streets, roadways, sidewalks, walkways, and handicap ramps
  • Communicate with supervisors, Airside Operations, airlines, airport tenants, contractors and Airport Maintenance Workers in coordination of snow removal operations
  • Coordinate snow melter operations, preventative maintenance and repairs
  • Monitor, report, and eliminate unsafe conditions and promote the use of safety equipment
  • Maintain the knowledge and ability to operate all types of equipment in snow removal operations
  • Supervise, train, monitor and inspect contractor's work and equipment in snow removal functions in parking areas, including equipment inspection, call-outs and record keeping of daily work
  • Monitor and report inventories of sand, salt and deicing chemicals
  • Mark, flag, stake or otherwise highlight troubled areas, such as hydrants, curbs, drains, vents or electric vaults

Grounds Keeping

  • Supervise and work with Airport Maintenance Workers in designated areas using a variety of turf maintenance equipment
  • Maintain the knowledge and ability to operate all types of turf maintenance tools and equipment
  • Conduct pest control as prescribed by law
  • Apply herbicides, fertilizers and water trees, grass, shrubs, flowers, etc.
  • Maintain airside/landside turf areas by seeding, sodding, grading, soil filling, etc.
  • Conduct tree and shrub planting and trimming
  • Monitor and maintain clear zones along airport perimeter security fences
  • Flag, stake, reflector or otherwise mark drains, culverts, electrical vaults, etc., to facilitate night-time cutting
  • Identify, report or schedule areas in need of work
  • Provide clean and aesthetically pleasing areas for the traveling public and tenants
  • Monitor and report inventories of weed whips and line, herbicides, pesticides, ready mixed fuels, shovels, seed, rakes and other grounds keeping supplies

Asphalt and Concrete Maintenance

  • Supervise and work with Airport Maintenance Workers in performing asphalt and concrete repairs and preventive maintenance to runways, taxiways, ramps, streets, roadways, parking facilities and sidewalks
  • Place concrete or asphalt in repairs or replacement of catch basins, drains, sign bases, etc.
  • Provide traffic control at work sites and insure that proper safety equipment is used on job and task
  • Perform brick and block work as needed
  • Operate all equipment required for joint sealing operations including heating unit, applicators, concrete saws, asphalt saws, sealant removal equipment, etc., on air and ground side areas
  • Identify, report or schedule areas in need of repairs or capital improvements
  • Monitor, inspect and train Airport Maintenance Workers on procedures, equipment operation, and final cleanup in work areas
  • Monitor and report inventories of joint seal material, concrete and asphalt saw blades, backer rods, winter mix asphalt, shovels, rakes, gas and liquid fuels, etc.

Fencing, Gates, Signage Construction and Maintenance

  • Supervise and work with Airport Maintenance Workers in designated areas
  • Rebuild, repair, install chain link fencing and gate sections, manual and electric
  • Install and repair signage, posts, supports, bases, etc.
  • Instruct workers in operation of fencing equipment, sign truck equipment, etc.
  • Monitor, report and label inventories of gates, fence posts, chain link fabric, fence ties, top rail, and other accessories, as well as snow fence components and traffic control signs

General Airport Cleaning

  • Supervise and work with Airport Maintenance Workers in designated areas including ramps, parking decks, roads, parking lots, runways, taxiways, etc.
  • Instruct Airport Maintenance Workers in operation of small power sweepers, large sweepers, back pack blowers, power washers, vacuums, and other equipment used in cleaning airside and landside areas, including safety equipment
  • Collect refuse from waste receptacles and transfer to dumpsters
  • Keep airside and landside areas free from hazards
  • Inspect areas and remove FOD (debris) from air operation areas. Identify areas in need of clean-up
  • Monitor and report inventories of trash bags, brooms, shovels, paper pickers, and other cleanup tools

Pollution Control

  • Supervise and work with Airport Maintenance Workers in clean-up operations involving fuel or contaminant spills
  • Perform storm sewer system inspections and check operation of storm water control equipment
  • Install, repair, replace, and remove absorbent booms and materials
  • Inspect and clean pollution containment dam of sand, gravel, debris, spillage, etc.
  • Monitor and maintain inventories of pollution control supplies, including absorbent pads, absorbent booms, waters, life preservers, pollution boats, rakes, etc.
  • Monitor and report status of pollution dumpster
  • Work with MAC’s safety and environmental personnel to ensure all legal guidelines are followed

General Assistance

  • Assist Carpenters, Painters, Electricians, Plumbers, Police and Fire departments, Building Services and others in their work
  • Assist in equipment maintenance and care of shop maintenance, cleanup and reorganization
  • Set up, work, take down, clean up, and supervise special events and shows
  • Monitor and report safety equipment inventories, attend training sessions, work with MAC environmental personnel on the Employee Right-to-Know program
  • Attend meetings and snow critiques as directed by Field Maintenance Assistant Managers, and maintains communication channels upward and downward in the organization
  • Assist in numerous other areas as directed by the Assistant Airport Director/Maintenance, Field Maintenance Manger, and Assistant Managers
  • Serve the public, promote safety, maintain airport aesthetics and appearance, help keep the airport operationally safe and managed in a cost-effective manner

Minimum Requirements

  • Extensive knowledge of airport airside and landside areas, airport operations, maintenance operations and all maintenance equipment
  • The two preceding years of experience must be as an Airport Maintenance Worker or Senior Airport Maintenance Worker
  • Has not received a disciplinary suspension within the previous year
  • Has not failed a probationary period for any MAC job classification within the previous two years
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work for extended periods of time in varied and extreme weather
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor, ability to lift, position and pull 50 pounds
  • Possession of a valid state issued Class B or higher driver's license
  • Possession of a valid MSP AOA driver's license within 6 months of appointment

Desirable Requirements

  • Previous supervisory or team leader experience
  • Post-secondary degree, OR in lieu of degree, 16 or more continuing education credits
  • Completion of MAC-approved management skills course
  • Proficient in using email and word processing software
  • Certified in chemical applications

Metropolitan Airports Commission Employee Benefits Summary

Paid Time Off

HOLIDAYS

MAC provides 11 paid holidays per year and one paid floating holiday.

SICK LEAVE

Full-time employees accrue 11 days of sick leave per year. Part-time, regular status employees accrue sick leave at a pro-rated rate, based on the number of hours worked.

VACATION

Regular status full-time employees accrue 15 days (120 hours) of vacation per year. The accrual rate increases with years of service. Regular status part-time employees accrue vacation at a pro-rated rate, based on the number of hours worked. Vacation is available for use after the first six months of employment.

HEALTH CARE SAVINGS PLAN

Regular status employees and MAC contribute to a Health Care Savings Plan. This plan is designed to offset medical expenses upon separation of employment. Contributions to this account are pre-tax. Earnings and withdrawals from the account are tax exempt.

Deferred Compensation
