Position Summary
Responsible for learning journey cable splicer position through after-hours coursework and process training requiring overtime work as necessary.
Essential Functions
- Learns to use and operate all tools and equipment pertaining to underground distribution.
- Learns to identify and handle all materials and components associated with underground residential distribution (URD).
- Learns to identify and handle all materials and components associated with lead cable work.
- Learns to read and interpret various underground-related prints and drawings.
- Communicates with employees, other departments and Line Department personnel to assure proper understanding of job procedures and daily activities.
- Communicates with customers to promote a positive awareness of BWL responsibility.
- Required to follow BWL Safety Manual and wear required personal protective equipment.
- Attends training for safety awareness or skills improvement as assigned by supervisor, BWL or governmental agency such as MIOSHA.
Job Specifications
- Pre-Apprenticeship requirement is: Math Level: 4, Reading Level: 4, Writing Level: 2
- Must be respirator certified to work in confined spaces.
- Must work with asbestos and lead.
- Must have an annual physical and be monitored for blood lead levels.
Commercial Driver’s License (cdl)
- Candidates must possess a valid Michigan driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
- Upon hire they must provide proof of successful completion of the State of Michigan written portion of the Commercial Drivers License (CDL) examination, and pass the Department of Transportation (DOT) physical exam.
- Within six months of the date of hire they must successfully pass the Michigan CDL skills/road test.
- Internal applicants must currently possess valid Michigan CDL with required endorsements or at a minimum, pass DOT physical exam and State of Michigan written portion of the CDL examination within 15 days of transfer.
- Individuals will be subject to DOT requirements in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMSCA), including random testing for controlled substances and alcohol.
Physical Requirements
- Required to be able to contort hands and body into awkward positions throughout the workday in order to work in trenches, manholes, vaults, and access openings.
- Must have the physical ability to repeatedly perform tasks while working above and below shoulder level. Must be able to climb ladders, stairs, and ramps.
- Must be able to work while on uneven or irregular terrain.
- Responsible for operating a variety of trucks and equipment.
- Operates jackhammers and utilizes various tools and materials that may weigh up to 75 pounds.
- Wire identification tasks require adequate visual acuity and color differentiation.
- Needs to be able to listen and respond to emergency calls, and clearly communicate critical details related to emergencies.
- Must possess sufficient hearing ability to accurately detect, localize, and assess sounds.
Working Conditions
- All temperature and humidity ranges, indoors and outdoors.
- Noise and dust levels may be high at times.
- Possible confined/tight spaces.
