Reports to: Technical Director/Director of Production

Supervises: Stage Crew

Cleveland Play House (CPH) is seeking an IATSE Stage Carpenter to join the production team for the 2024-25 season to ensure that each technical rehearsal and performance runs smoothly and build for our main stages, New Ground Theatre Festival, and the CWRU/CPH MFA program. Must be willing to join IATSE Local 27.

Responsibilities Include

  • Assist with build, load-in and strike of scenery
  • Attend meet and greets and designer run
  • Make sure all line sets are properly spiked before the onstage spacing rehearsal and removed at strike of show
  • Attend each tech rehearsal and performance of show
  • Attend any additional on-stage understudy, and/or put-in rehearsal after the show has opened
  • Train and supervise Stage Crew on proper methods to move scenery
  • Oversee that stage and backstage areas are swept, mopped and cleaned before each rehearsal and performance
  • Preset and supervise Stage Crew presets of scenery and props as in collaboration with Stage Management
  • Maintain inventory of backstage equipment/supplies and track Stage Carpenter road-case between Theatres
  • Keep paperwork up to date by writing down changes to preset lists or run list; ensure Stage Crew updates paperwork during techs and provide Stage Management staff with updated copy of paperwork
  • Assist with the daily post show clean up
  • Notify Stage Management and TD of broken scenery or props; repair and maintain scenery and emergency repairs for props during the run of the show
  • Maintain a safe and healthy work environment, and uphold the policies and procedures outlined in the Cleveland Play House Handbook.
  • Attend and participate in all assigned staff training sessions, department meetings, show specific trainings and potential committee groups within the organization.
  • Follow all health and safety guidelines established by the theatre; report any unsafe conditions or practices to your supervisor immediately
  • Embody the CPH core belief that each team member has value and should be treated accordingly. Professional behavior and representation of CPH toward staff, guest artists, and patrons is expected by all team members
  • Cultivate a collaborative, inclusive, and anti-racist culture by building positive relationships with staff and guest artists, and immediately addressing instances of micro aggressive or harmful language or behavior

Desired Experience And Skills Include

  • Leadership and communication skills
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints
  • Ability to follow instructions
  • Knowledge of scenic construction techniques and materials
  • Working knowledge of welding, pneumatics, hydraulics, motion control, and rigging
  • Ability to take on individual projects and follow them through to completion
  • Ability to lift at least 30 pounds and work from ladders and personnel lifts
  • Ability to work well with a variety of working styles with other staff
  • Ability to stay alert and focused during long periods of inactivity
  • Ability to see in low light situations

This position will mainly work with the Technical Director, Associate Technical Director, IATSE Scenic Carpenters, Production Technician, Stage Managers, Run Crew, and Director of Production.

Work Schedule

Primarily evening/weekend Tuesday through Sunday depending on show schedule. During non-tech/performance weeks, Carpenter Shop Hours M-F 8am-4:30pm.
