Position Description


POSITION TITLE: Building Paraprofessional            

DATE:  July 2012 (Rev 7/2017)

DEPARTMENT: Building Education  

FLSA: Non-exempt (Support Staff AFSCME)


Summary:

The Building Paraprofessional position will provide assistance to students, under the direction of certified staff while maintaining an orderly, safe and pleasant atmosphere by helping and supervising students in accordance with Board Policy and established district procedures.


Reporting Relationships:

§ Works jointly with other aides, teachers, and the building administration.

§ Works cooperatively with administrators, teachers, staff, students, and the community to perform job responsibilities as outlined.

§ The Building Paraprofessional’s immediate supervisor will be the building principal. However, direction and assignments will be from the teacher(s) running the classrooms, special education teachers and administrators, and the building administration.

§ Evaluations will be done by building administration in consultation with others


Terms of Employment:

§ Student School Calendar with the potential of additional day(s) for training or informational purposes.

§ Salary and Benefits are as described in the current Collective Bargaining Agreement.

§ Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions set forth by the Board of Directors and the Collective Bargaining Agreement.


Qualifications:

To successfully perform this position, a person must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The qualification requirements listed below represent minimum levels of educational achievement, training, skill and/or ability necessary.


§ High School Diploma or equivalent necessary.

§ Must possess or willing to acquire the Para-professional certification within 12 months of accepting the position and maintain the certification.

§ Current certification or willing to obtain within a timeframe determined by the district in CPR, First Aid and Safety.

§ Valid Pennsylvania Driver’s License preferred.

§ Meet requirements set forth by the State of Pennsylvania and the Board of School Directors for employment.


Physical and Ability Requirements:

§ Ability to reach above and below the waist. 

§ Ability to use fingers and hands to pick, feel and grasp objects.

§ Some stooping, kneeling, bending and twisting of the body required.

§ Ability to reach, pull, and use repetitive motions.

§ Ability to lift and/or carry more than 25 pounds, up to 75 pounds.

§ Ability to sit/walk/stand/move throughout the work environment.

§ Visual and auditory acuity.

§ Must possess excellent interpersonal skills.

§ Must be able to work in an environment with frequent interruptions.

§ Ability to communicate effectively.

§ Ability to organize tasks.

§ Ability to multi-task.

§ Ability to exercise good judgment.

§ Ability to push wheelchair

§ Ability to provide physical assistance to students in standing, sitting, walking

§ Ability to assist in diapering students or assisting them in the bathroom

§ Must be able to respond quickly to escalating or unsafe student behavior




Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

§ Maintain order in the various educational settings.

§ Is alert to the students and their needs.

§ Assist students with school assignments.

§ Escort/assist students with mobility or other physical constraints. (including pushing wheelchairs, holding hands with students that may lean or stumble)

§ Escort students in and outside the school building.

§ Ability to stay with and pace students ranging from Kindergarten to age 21.

§ Assist students at lunch or in the bathroom.

§ Assist in lifting students and diapering as needed.

§ Ability to separate personal connection and maintain professionalism.

§ Supervise and assist students with various tasks.

§ Supervise multiple students simultaneously and react quickly to intervene as needed

§ Familiarity with student Individualized Education Plans (I.E.P.)

§ Collect and record student data as determined by supervisors.

§ Communicates effectively and appropriately with employees, students, and the community.

§ Maintain confidentiality about students in accordance with district guidelines.

§ Maintain a positive demeanor at all times including, but not limited to, the use of appropriate language.

§ Maintains a calm, positive attitude

§ Ability to work with all students, multi-task, manage change in a fast paced environment

§ Demonstrates openness to suggestions for improving performance.

§ Maintain an appropriate record of punctuality and attendance.

§ Demonstrates initiative, independence and decision making appropriate to the performance tasks of this position.

§ Adheres to professional, ethical, and legal standards.

§ Any other duties related to student supervision as assigned by the Building Principal or other District Administration.
