The purpose of this position is to maintain all public works light to heavy tools and equipment in a reliable and safe condition to be available for service according to approved standards. The work involves completing work orders requesting parts from the Inventory Management Specialist reviewing PM check lists and utilizing proper techniques for lift operation tire rotation grease inspections and all other aspects of the equipment maintenance group. This includes performing routine maintenance for all equipment maintaining tools and equipment in the most cost-effective manner recording all equipment maintenance and associated costs using parts and supplies wisely and recommending maintenance and repair improvements to reduce overall operating costs. It also involves learning the proper operating and maintenance procedures for all City vehicles and equipment.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustration of the various types of work that may be performed.   • Reads equipment specifications; repair manuals and implements adopted maintenance schedules and procedures. Uses said information to follow periodic maintenance (PM) check lists and complete work orders. Learns the proper care; use and preventative maintenance checks for equipment. Prepares equipment maintenance reports through work orders and/or other job cost and control procedures. Learns the process to initiate corrective actions to achieve equipment availability; safety; maintenance; repair and cost control standards and objectives.
  • Performs routine equipment maintenance and repair work involving tasks from checking sufficiency of fluid levels and pressures; rotating and torquing tires; assists with monthly UST-AST Inspections; fluid film vehicles/trucks; and performs forced re-gens.
  • Is subject to call out to respond to emergencies after normal working hours.
  • Able to perform proper lift operations for vehicles/trucks/equipment.
  • Assists other mechanics with more complex repair/maintenance work.
  • Maintains and repairs equipment according to approved procedures and to meet safety standards.
  • Operates a forklift when necessary and by following safe procedures.
  • Performs annual State inspections on City vehicles.
  • Works according to approved employee and equipment safety procedures.

Work Environment

Work is performed in office; shop and field locations; including in; around; under; and on top of many different types of light to heavy equipment. Work is performed inside and outside in all weather conditions.

Minimum Required Qualifications

Applicants for this position must have graduated from high school or have earned a graduate equivalent diploma (GED) and not less than one (1) year of experience maintaining and repairing light and heavy equipment. Incumbent must possess a valid commercial driver's license; class B with a tanker endorsement or obtain one within one (1) year and have no offenses which would prohibit or restrict any insurance carrier providing coverage with the City. Incumbent shall hold a light and heavy-duty State Inspection license or obtain one within one (1) year.

Incumbent shall supply their own tools. An annual tool reimbursement program is available following the successful completion of the probationary period.

Obtaining additional certification or licensing will be required. ASE Certification holders earn an additional $.50 an hour.

The equivalent of two (2) years post-secondary training in automotive or equipment mechanic technology and a working knowledge of current diagnostic aids is a plus.
